Wesley Named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS -- BYU forward Mekeli Wesley, a 6-9, junior from Provo, Utah (Provo High School), is the Mountain West Conference Men's Basketball Player of The Week.

Wesley led the Cougars to a perfect 3-0 record last week, including the team title at their own Cougar Classic. BYU is off to its best start in seven years with a 6-1 record, the top record in the conference.

Wesley average 20.6 points (23-44 from the field) and 9 rebounds per game over a three-game span. He shot 76 percent from the foul line (16-21), including a MWC-high 14 free throws made in 18 attempts vs. Arizona State. Wesley also dished out seven assists and had six steals for the week.

In the 78-67 win over Arizona State, Wesley tied a season-high by scoring 26 points, while pulling down nine boards and handing out four assists in 28 minutes of play.

In the first game of the Cougar Classic on Friday, he collected his first double-double of the year with 24 points and 10 rebounds in the 76-61 win over Texas Southern. In Saturday's title game, Wesley scored 12 points and brought down eight rebounds in the 66-53 defeat of Weber State. He was named MVP of the Cougar Classic for the second time in three years.

Wesley leads BYU in scoring (21.4 ppg) and rebounding (6.1 rpg) in 1999. This is his first player of the week honor this season and the second of his career.
