1997-1998 Women's Tennis Season Summary

Highlights from the 1997-98 season include a 22-3, 4-0 record, a WAC Championship, an automatic qualification to the NCAA Championships and an 8th place finish in the national rankings.

The old strength and new talent played a key role in the Cougars top-ten season.

At number one was freshman star Holly Parkinson whose (.800, 36 9) singles record finished second only to teammate Eline Chiew's .829, 34-7 top scoring.

Parkinson was ranked nationally in singles play all year finishing at the number 14 spot which entitled her to an ITA All-America honor. She was the only player in the country to notch victories over the number one and two ranked singles players in the 1997-98 season.

Chiew, a junior from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was BYU's number two singles player who had a 21-1 record losing only one match in dual competition, a tough three-set defeat to Lule Aydin of Wake Forest at the NCAA Championships in South Bend, Indiana. Chiew also picked up her first ITA-All-America citation after finished ranked 17th nationally in singles.

The only senior on the team was team captain Adrien Jenkins, from Ogden, Utah. Jenkins posted a 32-10 singles record at the number three spot in her final season with the Cougars. She and Chiew played the number two doubles team and were a solid strength at the position, compiling a 21-13 overall record.

A trio of freshmen players from down under contributed greatly to the team during the year. Jodi Richardson, from Canberra, Brooke Leavens, from Sydney and Tara Reid from Coogee, N.S. W., Australia played a major role in the success of the Cougar squad.

Leavens saw major action at the number six singles position tallying a 16-3 record. Richardson and Reid shared duties at the number four and five singles spot with Richardson finishing the season with 13 wins and six losses. Reid compiled an 11-9 finish.

Doubles play was another key ingredient during the 1997-98 season. Contributing to the success were a mix of three duos led by Chiew/Jenkins who went over .600 on the win column. The duo finished the year with a 21-13, .617 record. The number two doubles team made up of Parkinson/Richardson also had a strong finish with 10 wins and two losses. Utah transfer Kim Kelly teamed up with Reid for a 9-5 record at the number three position.

An undefeated home season, five shutouts including three at the WAC tournament, and a top-ten finish all made for another in a long line of super seasons for BYU's women's tennis program.
