BYU Women's Tennis Team Finishes Play At ITA Regional Tournament

SALT LAKE CITY (Nov. 6 1999) -- Led by an impressive showing by the doubles team of Liza Khoudoiarova and Dominique Reynolds, the BYU women's tennis team finished competition in the ITA Regional Tournament.

Khoudoiarova and Reynolds, both freshmen, advanced to the semifinals of the doubles main draw before being defeated 8-4 by eventual tournament champions Ashley Dolman and Maria Galoustova from Oklahoma State. The same team of Dolman and Galoustova knocked out BYU's Eline Chiew and Gee Gee Garvin in the quarterfinal round, 8-6.

"As a whole it was a pretty good tournament," BYU coach Craig Manning said. "Liza (Khoudoiarova) played very well. Her and Dominique Reynolds played excellent in the doubles tournament. There are still some things we could do better, but I think we're on the right path."

Khoudoiarova advanced to the round of 16 in singles play by upsetting fifth-seeded Anna Pampoulova of Kansas State 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. She was eliminated by the 14th-seeded Dominika Olszewska of Oklahoma State 6-1, 6-3.

Chiew and Garvin, both seniors, each advanced to the quarterfinals before losing. Chiew, the second-seeded player in the tournament, was upset by seventh-seeded Natalie Alekhova from New Mexico 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Garvin, the 11th-seeded player, was eliminated by top-seeded Ana Friganovic of New Mexico 6-3, 6-0. Alekhova and Friganovic were eventually named co-champions after advancing to the final.
