BYU Women's Tennis Travels To ITA Regional Tournament

With players from 25 different schools competing, the BYU women's tennis team will participate in the ITA Regional Tournament Wednesday through Saturday at the Eccles Center in Salt Lake City. The tournament includes teams from as far away as Kansas and is hosted by the University of Utah.

Cougar senior Eline Chiew is the second seed in the singles tournament behind Anna Friganovic of New Mexico. Chiew won the BYU Invitational earlier this fall. Chiew and partner Gee Gee Garvin are the second-seeded doubles team behind Boise State's Pia-Lena Ander and Beau Jones.

The tournament will be the last for the women until they start the winter season Jan. 28 with the University of Minnesota Invitational Team Tournament in Minneapolis. The results of this tournament will be counted toward qualification for regional play in February.

Coach Manning quote:

"We should do pretty well. We have had good gradual progress each week. Hopefully we can go in there and learn some things we can take into the winter semester."

Men's Tennis Finishes ITA Regional Tournament

One singles player and two doubles teams from the BYU men's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Regional Tournament before being knocked out of the tournament that ended Sunday in Las Vegas.

Senior Damien Ward, the eighth-seed in the tournament, advanced to the singles semifinal round after defeating Matt Bere of San Diego State 6-3, 6-7, 6-4, before losing to fourth-seed Nic Dubey of New Mexico 7-6, 7-5 (5).

Ward also played in the semifinal round of the doubles competition with partner sophomore Gert Vilms. Vilms and Ward were defeated by New Mexico's Dubey and Matt Amgwerd, 9-8.

The other Cougar team in a doubles semifinal was the team of junior Nic Losee and freshman Carlos Lozano. They advanced to the semifinal by beating the top-seeded team in the tournament, Leif Meineke and Wesley Moodie of Boise State 8-3. They were defeated in the semifinals by Darin Currall and Amod Wakalkar of the University of Idaho 8-6.
