Parents are Robert and Kay...served an LDS mission to Albuquerque from 1985-87...married Sarah Newby in April, 1989...transferred from Arizona, where he redshirted his freshman year...older brother, Ken, was a starting nose guard for BYU...recruited by UCLA, USC, Colorado and Utah...majoring in health care administration.

Before BYU

All-CIF in football and track...captain of the track team and MVP of the football team...set a school record in the 440.

Freshman Year 1987

Traveled with the varsity as third-string tight end and for special teams.

Sophmore Year 1988

  • Caught nine passes for 121 yards and scored two touchdowns
  • Started against San Diego State when Darren Handley and Travis McBeth were hurt
Junior Year 1989

  • Moved into first-unit spot
  • Caught five passes for 99 yards in spring game
  • Started all 13 games...had a great 48-yard TD catch against Colorado State off a blitz
  • First team All-America by The Sporting News, third team All-America by Associated Press, first team All-WAC by both the coaches and writers
  • Featured in Sports Illustrated as one of the juniors who would be turning pro a year early
Senior Year 1990

  • Named a consensus All-America selection
  • Caught 68 passes for 1,156 yards and two touchdowns - an NCAA record for yards by a tight end
  • NCAA record stood until 2005
  • Was 5th overall in the NCAA in receiving yards
  • Had at least four receptions in every game but one as a senior
  • Five 100-yard receiving games
  • Season-best 162 receiving yards against San Diego State
  • Drafted in the 10th round by the Cincinnati Bengals
