PROVO, Utah - The  BYU men's and women's swimming team defeated the University of Denver Saturday afternoon at the Richards Building Pool by winning the final event of the night. The men won 151-149 and the women won 156-144.

Following Hayden Palmer's victory in the 200 IM, all the men's team had to do was win the last event of the meet, the 400 free relay. The race started out close with Preston Jenkins swimming side-by-side the Pioneer swimmer. Stott Bushnell gave the Cougars a small lead and Garret Beaman pushed the lead to a full body length. Brent Murray swam the final leg and finished the race with a time of 3:01.84 to give BYU a victory on the men's side.

She was joined on the team by Natalie Bennion, Hailey Campbell and Sarah Bushnell.

"It was a great meet today and a good way to send off our seniors," head coach John Brooks said. "It all came down to the last event which made the meet very exciting. DU is a great team and ranked in the top 25 for guys so that was a big win for us and our girls all performed well today."

Last home meets of the season, senior night

Image

PROVO, Utah – BYU swimming and diving will honor its 11 seniors on Saturday against the University of Denver, a day after the women host Oregon State Friday night at the Richards Building Pool.

The women’s swimming team will host the Beavers on Friday night at 5 p.m. MST and the meet against the Pioneers will take place on Saturday at 1 p.m. MST.

The men’s team will honor seniors Gary Arthur, Samuel Bates, Garret Beaman and Brady Wells. The women’s team will honor seniors Kassandra Bispo, Dayna Christensen, Londyn Clawson, Alina Fong, Amanda Heninger, Melissa Manser and Taryn Toolson Lewis.

“We are thrilled to honor the seniors that we have on this team,” head coach John Brooks said. “They have put a lot of time and effort in the past four years and they have really been a great example to our underclassmen.”

The women’s team last faced Oregon State back in 2003 where they fell 131-106. BYU holds a 5-2 record overall against the Beavers in dual meets and are 3-1 in the Richards Building Pool. The first meet between the two schools took place in 1981. The Beavers do not have a dive team, so this meet will consist of 13 events instead of the typical 16-event schedule.

“Oregon State will be great competition for us,” Brooks said. “They are a Pac-12 school with a lot of talent, and it will be good for our girls to race against them on Friday night.”

Last year the teams traveled to Denver and fell in a close meet. The men lost 194.5-105.5 and the women lost 158-142. In the meet, Kimberly Welch Doroghian swept the 100 and 200 fly and the men’s 400-relay team took first. The men hold a 1-1 record all-time and the women are 2-1 all-time against the Pioneers.

“Denver has been a really strong team in the past couple of years,” Brooks said. “They have been ranked in the top 25 and have consistently performed well this year. This will be a great test for us as we prepare for conference coming up soon.”

Both the men and women are coming off a loss to Arizona State this past weekend.  Preston Jenkins won both the 100 and 200 back, Jordan Fletcher won the 50 free and Hayden Palmer won the 200 IM.

This will be the last meet for the swimming teams before the MPSF Conference Championships, which will take place Feb. 20-23 at the Belmont Pool in Long Beach, Calif. The diving teams have two meets remaining on their schedule.

Check the women’s schedule page for results of the two meets.
