PROVO -- Senior guard Erin Thorn's season-high 34 points propelled BYU to an 87-70 win over Montana State in a Monday matinee at the Marriott Center on Dec. 30. Thorn, who added eight assists, a block and two steals, just missed her career-best mark of 36 points.
"If she doesn't play like this, we lose," said head coach Jeff Judkins. "She took the ball more comfortably and let it come to her." With the win, BYU improves to 7-3 while Montana State suffers only its second loss of the season to fall to 8-2.
Sophomore standout Danielle Cheesman had career night, contributing 21 points in 20 quality minutes, a career high, and also adding four rebounds and three assists. The 6'2" forward scored eight early points to help the Cougars build an 18-10 lead over the Bobcats with11: 53 remaining in the first half.
After Montana State drew within three, 19-16, BYU went on a 22-11 run to close out the half up 41-27.
The Bobcats battled back in the second half, however, closing the gap to only eight points on several occasions, the last coming with 7:51 remaining in the match to trail the Cougars 71-63.
"We did a real nice job defensively in the first half and then we just lost intensity in the second half," Judkins said. "We just let people beat us one-on-one. There's no secret to it, it's just competing."
BYU's defense tightened down on Montana State, only allowing the Bobcats seven more points, while the Cougar offense poured in 16 points to seal the victory. Thorn hit two free throws, a field goal and a three-pointer to ensure the win.
The Cougars, 7-3 head to Southern California to face Santa Barbara on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 2 p.m. and then return home to host Denver at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4.

Cougar Review
The BYU team begins 2003 with a 7-3 record with its three losses suffered on the road, vs Oregon (77-80) at George Washington (58-82) and vs Alabama (59-70).
BYU returns three starters from last season's 24-9, 10-4 team who made history by winning their first-ever NCAA Tournament game, going on to the "Sweet Sixteen" in the Midwest Regional.
After 10 games played, All-American and MWC MVP Erin Thorn leads the Cougar offense with an average of 20.0 points and 4.5 rebounds a game. Senior Jennifer Leitner follows as the team's second leading scorer and the leading rebounder. Leitner averages 14.1 points and 9.5 boards a game. Sophomore forward Danielle Cheesman follows in scoring and is averaging 11.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
This season's roster has seen the return of MWC's 1999-2000 Newcomer of the Year Julie Whetten Sullivan who redshirted last year. She has reclaimed her starting point-guard spot contributing 7.2 points and 3.1 rebounds. UVSC junior transfer Kestlee Nelson comes off the bench for Sullivan with her 2.0 points and 1.5 rebounds a game.
In the Cougars most recent game, sophomore Kali Taylor got the starting nod as a forward replacing UC Santa Barbara senior transfer Lisa Hansen. Taylor contributes to the team with her 3.8 and 2.3 rebounds per game. Another Cougar guard is Maria Chiara from Hamilton, New Zealand who played two season at Casper Junior College before serving an 18-month LDS mission to Florida. She has yet to play this season as she has been plagued with illnesses.
Senior guard Amy Lewis will finish her college career joined by her twin sister Angie Gatten who redshirted last year. The sister duo walked on the Cougar roster last year. Both sisters have played in four games so far this year.
UCSB transfer and senior Lisa Hansen who came off the bench in every game last year, started in the first nine games and tallied 5.0 points and 3.9 boards a game.
Senior forward Brittany Larson has played in all 10 games and c contributes 1.4 points and 2.1 rebounds.
Utah high school standouts Jen Overdiek, Nancy Seljaas and Ambrosia Anderson from Colorado Springs, Colorado are also contributing to this year's Cougar effort with Anderson getting the starting nod at forward the last three of four contests.

UC Santa Barbara
The Gauchos will be hosting the Cougars this Thursday afternoon at the Thunderdome. UCSB has compiled a 5-2 record to date and is coming off a 10-point 55-44 loss to MWC foe Colorado State in Ft. Collins on Dec. 29. The Gauchos other loss was at Michigan where they dropped that game 64-70. Kristen Mann tops the leader board for UCSB with an average of 15.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Lindsay Taylor is second in scoring and rebounding with 13.9 points and 8.4 boards a game. Three other players also score in double digits with 12.6 from Jess Hansen, 10.4 from Mia Fisher and 10.0 for Lisa Willett. Brandy Richardson who has started in all seven games to date is atop the rebound category, grabbing 9.3 boards a game. The Gauchos are shooting 43 percent from the field and 74 percent from the free throw line and also shoot 32 percent from behind the arc. As a team, UCSB is scoring 70.4 points a game and allowing opponents 68.3 points per game. At home the Gauchos have compiled a perfect 3-0 record and they average just under 2,000 fans at the Thunderdome.

The University of Denver will be making its first appearance a the Marriott Center. The Pilots come to Provo with a 5-7 record, but will play Idaho State on Jan. 2 before making the trip to Utah. Ashley Atkinson, a 5-10 senior guard is the team's leading scorer with 11.6 points and 2.3 rebounds. Nicky Eason, who's a 5-10 sophomore forward tops the list in rebounds for the University of Denver grabbing 5.2 rebounds and contributing 8.4 points a game. As a team, the Pilots are shooting 37 percent from the field, 58 percent from the free throw line, and 30 percent from three-point range. After 12 games to date, the team is scoring 59.3 points to opponents 65.6 and they have yet to win a game on the road, but have a 1-2 record when playing on neutral courts.

The Judkins file
Jeff Judkins, begins his second season at the helm of the Cougar women's program. Judkins, a longtime University of Utah coach and player has a proven record of success dating back to his high school days at Highland HS in Salt Lake City.
An all-state selection in basketball, football and baseball, Judkins went on to play for Utah from 1974-78. While playing for the Utes, he helped the team win one conference championship and two berths in the NCAA Tournament. He was a second-team academic All-American and three-time first-team District VII academic selection. Judkins earned three first-team All-WAC honors and was a member of the 1977 United States World Games team that captured the gold medal.
He played five years in the NBA for the Boston Celtics, Portland Trailblazers, Detroit Pistons and the Utah Jazz. He was a second-round pick by the Celtics in 1978, the same year the Celtics selected Larry Bird with the sixth pick overall.
After his NBA career, he returned to the U of U in 1989, and remained with the men's program for 10 years. Judkins, a Salt Lake City native, graduated from Utah in 1978 with a degree in health and physical education. He is a member of the Utah Sports Hall of Fame and the Crimson Club Hall of Fame.
