FORT COLLINS -- Keeping its eight-game win streak alive and tallying head coach Jeff Judkins' 200th career victory, the BYU women's basketball team (20-7, 12-1) took their talents on the road and defeated home team Colorado State 64-55, Wednesday, to keep first place in the Mountain West Conference.

"We got really good bench play today and this was definitely a great team effort," Judkins said. "Mindy did a really good job and she had great game, especially in the first half. Defensively we were able to hold them in spurts and that was good for us."

The scoring began on a Coriann Fraughton (Wood) 3-pointer but the Rams would come back from there and continue on to take a 12-5 lead before BYU brought the score back close.

Both teams battled hard to finish out the first half with the Cougars coming out on a 33-25 halftime lead. Senior Mindy Bonham had 17 points at halftime to lead all players. Bonham finished with 21 points on three 3-pointers to tie her season-high.

Back from the half, BYU took control of the game as they went on an 18-10 run in the first eight minutes of second-half action.

Coriann Fraughton joined Bonham, in the second half, in double figures as she finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.

The Cougars shot 43.9 percent from the field compared to Colorado State's 40.8 while the Rams were able to grab three more rebounds than BYU.

Up next for BYU is a home game in the Marriott Center on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 3 p.m. against the San Diego State Aztecs. The Cougars' five seniors will be recognized at the conclusion of the game.

-Senior Mindy Bonham scored 17 points in the first half to lead all scorers going into the break. The points are the most she’s tallied in the first hall all season and in league play. She was 3-4 from three-point range. Bonham would finish the game with 21 marking her 18th season, 58th career and ninth in league play in double digits. The 21 points tied for season highs.

-Bonham dished out six assists for team and game highs. She also had three blocks, which are new season highs.

-Coriann Wood was in double figures with 13 points for her ninth in league play, 20th on the year, and 46th overall.

-Kim Parker made three of the four three pointers she attempted. They tie for season highs and are the most in league play.

In first place with an 11-1 league record an on an eight game win streak, the BYU women’s basketball team plays three of its last four conference games on the road.

The first of the road games for the Cougars (19-7, 11-1) is at CSU (12-13, 5-7), Wed. Feb. 23. The game tips off at 7 p.m.

BYU finishes out its home MWC schedule on Sat. Feb. 26 when it hosts SDSU (12-13, 6-7) in a 3 p.m., start. The Cougars’ five seniors will be recognized at the conclusion of the game.

TEAM CAPTAINS SELECTED

Mindy Bonham and Haley Hall have been chosen by their teammates as co-captians for the 2010-11 season. This is Hall’s third straight co-captain selection.

PLAYER UPDATES/INJURIES

Freshmen Morgan Bailey and Stephanie Rovetti will redshirt the 2010-11 season.

Sophomore forward Alexis Kaufusi will not finish the rest of this season after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma last week. The team will be wearing a white patch with a purple bow, her initials and her number on their team uniforms the rest of the year.

COLORADO STATE

CSU is in fifth place in the latest MWC standings with a 12-13, 5-7 record. Head coach Kristen Holt is in her third year at the helm of the Rams’s women’s basketball program. The Rams have three players scoring in double figures led by 16.4 points from junior guard/forward combo Kim Mestdagh. She also grabs 5.2 rebounds per contest. Sam Martin follows with 12.4 points and 6.4 rebounds while teammate Chatilla van Grinsven contributes 10.6 points and a team high 6.4 rebounds per contest. Mestdagh leads the way in both assists (61) and in steals (46).

Mindy Bonham recorded her second career double-double to lead the BYU women’s basketball team to a 73-57 victory over the Colorado State Rams. Bonham just missed a triple-double with 12 points, a career-high 11 assists and nine rebounds. Haley Hall scored 17 points including five treys, all in the first half, to lead all scorers.

Hall hit back-to-back three pointers in the first two minutes of play, giving BYU an 8-5 lead. She continued to contribute to BYU’s hot start that had the team hitting 4-of-5 shots to start the game.

BYU shot well from three with Hall hitting her fourth three-pointer of the half and Kristen Riley adding another to put the Cougars up 21-15 with 10:59 remaining until the break.

CSU and BYU went back and forth for the rest of the first half but the Cougars remained with the advantage. Jazmine Foreman hit a three-pointer with two seconds until halftime to give the Cougars a 33-27 lead as they headed into the locker room.

Hall was 5-of-7 from behind the arc to give her 17 first half points, a new career-high for points in a half.

BYU started the first seven minutes of the second half on a 13-2 run to extend the lead to 46-29.

Freshman Kim Parker hit another three-pointer for BYU with 3:20 remaining.

SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY

In the latest MWC standings, San Diego State is tied in fourth place with Utah with a 12-13, 6-7 record. The Aztecs enter the week on a four-game win streak with their latest victory, a 68-50 home win over Air Force. Two players are scoring in double figures for SDSU with Paris Johnson’s 14.9 points per game and a 7.8 average in the rebound category. Courtney Clements contributes 12.4 points and 3.7 rebounds a game. Jessika Bradley leads the way in the rebound category grabbing a team high 7.9 board per contest. Coco Davis has the most assists with 111 and in steals with 35. Head coach Beth Burns is in her sixth season with the women’s basketball program guiding the team to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament last year.

The BYU rallied back after an early deficit to get the 65-55 win over SDSU. Junior forward Kristen Riley recorded a new career-high 23 points in her explosive performance against the Aztecs on the road. She also added seven rebounds, two blocks and one assist. Teammate Coriann Fraughton and Mindy Bonham joined Riley in double-figures with 14 points apiece. The Aztecs went on a 10-0 run early in the first half to give them the 14-4 lead after six minutes of action. From there, however, the Cougars took back control of the game as they went on a 30-12 scoring streak to close out the half with a five-point lead. Riley led all players with 13 points as the teams headed into the locker room at halftime.

BYU extended their lead in the second half with a 9-0 run after being back from the half for just three minutes. Six of those nine points came from Riley.

The Cougars finished out the game, tallying 32 rebounds to the Aztec’s 26 and 22 assists to San Diego State’s nine. BYU senior guard Mindy recorded nine assists herself.

After the home game against SDSU, the Cougar team finished league play on the road. They travel to Albuquerque to take on New Mexico on Wed. Mar. 2 and then travel to Laramie to battle Wyoming on Sat. Mar. 5.

The following week it’s on to Las Vegas for the 2011 MWC Women’s Basketball Championships from the Thomas & Mack Center Mar. 8-12. The tournament winner receives an automatic bid into the 2011 NCAA tournament.
