PROVO -- The women of BYU gained a double victory over Texas Christian University and University of New Mexico last night, while the men came up short against UNM.

“It was a great meet for the women and an overall easy win for them, but it was a bit tougher for the men,” BYU head coach Tim Powers said. “The men were pretty far behind at one point, but they knew what they needed to do to bring up the score and they worked hard to get top finishes in their races. That’s not an easy task either, because TCU has a great team. But, they pushed themselves and although they outcome isn’t what we wanted, I am pleased with the effort.”

The women gained a victory over TCU and UNM in the 200 medley relay with a final time of 1:45.82.

John Kendrick was successful in the 1000 free for the men, touching in at 9:24.55 for first place.

In the 200 free, Rachel Grant took first, recording a time of 1:51.34. Candice Smith gained the next first place win for the girls in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.79.

In the 100 breaststroke, the women of BYU had a 1, 2, 3 sweep with Sara Jayne Baldwin touching in at first with 1:04.58, Kassy Bispo taking second with 1:05.06 and Londyn Clawson grabbing third with 1:05.98.

Grant gained another first place win in the 200 butterfly with her time of 1:59.60.

In the 200 back, Smith and Erin Pabst finished first and second with their times of 2:02.32 and 2:05.24, respectively.

For the men, Jake Taylor and Stephen Richards grabbed the 1, 2 finish with times of 1:50.90 and 1:52.75.

Clawson took first in the 200 breast for the women with her time of 2:21.98.

Freshman Allie Dodds was successful in the 500 free, grabbing first with a time of 5:01.93.

In the same event, Kendrick recorded the first place win with his time of 4:36.12.

Freshman Kim Welch grabbed first in the 100 fly with a time of 56.55, while Jordan Fletcher of the men’s team also took first with his time of 50.95.

In the 200 IM, Baldwin and Marnie Knoop finished first and second with times of 2:05.39 and 2:10.39, respectively.

Taylor and Vytenis Slenys did the same for the men’s event with Taylor touching in at first with 1:51.36 and Slenys coming in second at 1:53.75.

Brandon Watson was successful on the boards, as he took first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions with final scores of 382.20 and 419.30.

The Cougars will next compete against in-state rival University of Utah on Friday, Feb. 4 at 6 p.m.

PROVO, Utah (Jan. 26) – After coming off a big win last Saturday against Wyoming, the BYU swim and dive team will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, for a competition against Texas Christian University and University of New Mexico.

"TCU is a tough place to win at,” BYU head coach Tim Powers said. "They’re going to be very hard to beat at home. They put a lot of stock into this meet and are very competitive, but we are preparing for that and will be ready to compete when we get there.”

Jake Taylor, Brandon Watson and Dayna Christensen won Mountain West Conference swimmer and diver of the week awards for their performances this past weekend against Air Force and Wyoming.

The women’s team beat Air Force 190-102, while the men came up ten points short at 155-145. However, BYU gained a combined victory against Wyoming with the women winning 188-112 and the men 177-123.

The meet against TCU and UNM will take place Friday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m.
