Almeida and Malykh finish strong at Metroplex Mania

DALLAS – The BYU women’s tennis team finished three days of matches at the Metroplex Mania on Monday with 10 wins between singles and doubles.

“Southern Methodist was too strong today,” BYU head coach Holly Parkinson Hasler said. “However, they beat us; we did not beat ourselves. Though the girls felt defeated, every player on our team played their best tennis of the trip today.”

Over the weekend, Madeline Almeida and Polina Malykh went undefeated in third flight doubles (3-0), while Almeida also maintained an undefeated status in fourth flight singles (3-0). Malykh and Almeida claimed a tight match, 7-6, on the third day of matches against Southern Methodist’s Tiffany Hollebeck and Avery Aude. Later in the day, Almeida took another close win when she faced off against SMU’s Karina Traxler, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

“I’m super proud of Madeline for going undefeated in all six matches and for fighting through a tough three-set singles match today,” Hasler said.

Samantha Smith carried an impressive 2-1 record in third flight singles for the weekend, suffering her first loss on Monday against the SMU Mustang’s Ana Perez-Lopez, 0-6, 6-7. Malykh finished next in line with a 1-2 record in second flight doubles.

First and second flight doubles battled it out this weekend as well, both suffering losses on Monday. Kate Cusick and Abramyan finished with a 1-2 record.

The Cougars will compete in their first dual matches of the season against the Weber State Wildcats on Friday, Jan. 18, at 10 a.m. at the Ogden Racquet Club.

Image

PROVO, Utah – BYU women's tennis will begin the 2018-19 regular season on the road at the Metroplex Mania in Dallas from Jan. 11-14.

"The girls have anxiously waited for their team season to begin," BYU head coach Holly Parkinson Hasler said. "I am excited about our players and the team culture we have worked so hard to create."

Senior Taylah Beckman, juniors Polina Malykh, Katie Fitt, Kate Cusick and Samantha Smith, sophomores Madeline Almeida and Anastasia Abramyan and freshman Morgan Hall will represent BYU at the tournament. "The Metroplex Mania will be a great event to give the girls a lot of matches in a short amount of time. This will allow us to be more than ready for our first dual match against Weber State the following week," Hasler said.

Host Southern Methodist University (SMU), Northern Arizona University (NAU), Northeastern State University (NSU) and the University of Iowa will all compete in the tournament as well. The teams will play in flights with one winner for each flight in both singles and doubles. Match play will begin on Friday, Jan. 11, at 12:00 p.m. CST. Live streaming and stats will not be available.
