PROVO, Utah – Despite winning the No. 3 singles match, the BYU women's tennis team was defeated 1-4 by West Coast Conference foe Loyola Marymount.
Junior Polina Malykh highlighted the match with a dominant victory, 6-2, 6-3, over LMU’s Siobhan Anderson in No. 3 singles. Malykh’s win extended her season winning streak to 13 in a row. The Cougars are now 10-8, 3-3 WCC on the season.
The Lions came out swinging in doubles, winning two matches to claim the first point. BYU’s Anastasia Abramyan and Kate Cusick fell to Eva Marie Voracek and Vero Miroshnichenko, 2-6, in the No. 1 position. The Cougars’ Taylah Beckman and Samantha Smith battled to even out the match, but ultimately lost 2-6 to LMU’s Camila Tumosa and Elvira Juravliova in No. 3.
LMU collected three additional wins in singles despite the Cougars’ efforts to regain the lead. BYU’s Cusick dropped a 3-6, 2-6 match in No. 1 singles to Miroshnichenko. The Cougars’ Almeida then fell in a 1-6, 2-6 matchup at the No. 4 position to the Lion’s Elvira Juraliova. Despite rallying back in the second set, BYU’s Abramyan was bested in a No. 2 match, 1-6, 4-6, versus Voracek.
The Cougars host their final home match of the season against No. 8 Pepperdine on Saturday, April 13, at 12 p.m. MDT at the BYU Outdoor Tennis Courts. During the match, lone senior Taylah Beckman will be honored for her contributions and achievements to the team over the past four years. BYU hits the court against Loyola Marymount on Friday, April 12, at 12 p.m. MDT at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts, unless weather permits outdoor play. The team then will face off against No. 9 Pepperdine on Saturday, April 13, at 12 p.m. MDT at the BYU Outdoor Tennis Courts, weather permitting. BYU
The Cougars now hold a 10-7, 3-2 WCC record on the season. Last weekend, junior Polina Malykh broke her longest singles career winning streak, notching a 12th win for the season in the No. 3 position. BYU also recorded a 4-0 sweep over San Francisco and a disappointing 1-4 loss to Santa Clara.
Loyola Marymount
The Lions are 7-6, 2-3 WCC this season after a split weekend, beating Portland and losing to Gonzaga. BYU holds an even 4-4 all-time record with LMU, looking to take the advantage this weekend.
No. 9 Pepperdine
The Waves achieved a pair of conference wins this weekend, taking 4-0 victories over Gonzaga and Portland. With the wins, Pepperdine improved its record to 14-3, 5-0 WCC. Four of their singles players are ranked this season while all three of their doubles teams are in the top 100.
