PROVO -- The BYU women's tennis team (9-10) swept the Idaho State Bengals on Wednesday while only dropping one set in the process.
"This is a good win for us," said BYU head coach Craig Osborne. "We just need to play as many matches as we can at this point in the season. Match play helps us a lot more than practicing."
The Cougars opened up the match claiming the doubles point by winning at all three spots. Leeza Klempner and Dominique Reynolds teamed up at No. 1 to beat Eka Jvania and Hayli Scott 8-3. Hadley MacFarlane and Nicole Schneider defeated Melanie Kranz and Carol Tolsma 8-2 at the No. 2 spot while Rebecca Pike and Olga Boulytcheva beat Kristina Arutjunova and Armine Sarkavagyan 8-1 at the No. 3 position.
In singles, freshman Hanni Whittenbecker was able to see some action at the No. 6 singles spot. She beat Arutjunova 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 to improve to 1-1 on the season. The Cougars were able to win at all singles spots to clinch the victory.
BYU will be on the road to Fort Collins, Colo. this weekend to play Wyoming and Colorado State.
