PROVO -- No. 27 BYU is still atop the Mountain West Conference standings despite a loss to No. 56 San Diego State on SDSU's home courts Friday.
The Cougars are now 6-1 in conference play after the 4-3 loss. SDSU is tied for second place with UNLV and TCU at 5-1 with wins from both UNLV and TCU Friday as well.
The doubles point went to BYU with wins on courts one and two, but the singles play went the Aztecs way. No. 118 Anastasia Sourkova won on court one for the ninth time in a row and Dolly Chang won on court six for the third time in a row.
Courts two through five went SDSU's way, however, to clinch the team win. BYU's Lauren Jones on court two and Kristina Doerr on court four were both up in their matches, but lost in three sets. A win on either court would have turned the tide for the blue and white.
"They outperformed us in singles," BYU head coach Craig Manning said. "We played good doubles and won the doubles point. We fought awfully hard in singles, but it wasn't enough. We're just a little down at the moment, but we'll pick ourselves up for tomorrow."
BYU will face No. 50 UNLV on Saturday in a match that could determine the outcome of the MWC regular season championship. With a win BYU would clinch at least a share of the regular season title. Saturday will be the last match of the regular season for the Cougars before the MWC Tournament.

PROVO -- BYU's three-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Week Anastasia Surkova and her team will look to remain undefeated in conference play in San Diego this weekend.
BYU will face No. 65 San Diego State Friday and No. 50 UNLV on Saturday. SDSU and UNLV both hold 4-1 records in conference play and are tied for second with TCU. One win will earn BYU at least a share of the regular-season title, and two wins will ensure the regular-season championship for the blue and white.
The Cougars have won eight matches in a row and have won 15 of their last 16. The team's schedule has featured matches against 16 of the top 75 teams in the nation, and BYU currently holds a record of 9-5 against ranked teams on the season.
The Aztecs are currently 12-9 overall on the season and their only conference loss came at the hands of the Horned Frogs of TCU. SDSU's biggest win of the season was an upset over No. 31 Oregon in San Diego.
UNLV's Elena Gantcheva is the only player with more conference player-of-the-week honors than Surkova with a school record five. She is currently ranked No. 57 in the national singles polls and No. 16 with Kristina Nedeltcheva in the doubles polls.
The MWC Tournament will begin on April 25 at the Air Force Academy.
