SAN DIEGO -- The BYU women’s tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to No. 46 San Diego State Friday, the team’s second loss in conference play.
“We came out really slow in doubles and they took the momentum right off the bat,” BYU head coach Lauren Jones Spencer said. “In singles we played pretty well to start, but we kind of died in the heat and lost our energy.”
Elle Carney and Aubrey Paul pulled through in doubles with the only win of the day for BYU (9-9, 4-2), jumping ahead of Emma Cioffti and Julia Trunk 8-4 on Court 3. Cougars Megan Price and Callie Craig dropped their match 8-2 to No. 69 Roxane Ellison and Sierra Ellison. Elizaveta Ezhova and Desiree Tran fell to Alicia Aguilar and Julia Wais 8-3.
The Cougars couldn’t keep up with SDSU (15-7, 6-0) in singles. Aztec Trunk defeated Price in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) and Sierra Ellison defeated Ezhova. BYU’s Paul fought hard on Court 6, pushing the match to three sets by taking the second set 6-1, but lost the close final set (6-2, 1-6, 6-4). Sierra Ellison’s win gave SDSU the overall win.
The final three singles matches went to the Aztecs, completing the SDSU sweep.
Saturday, the Cougars face No. 43 UNLV Saturday at noon in San Diego.
