Hard Loss for Women's Tennis

Pullman, Wash. – The BYU women’s tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to Washington State Friday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts.

BYU’s No. 1 doubles pair of senior Megan Price and freshman Meghan Sheehan-Dizon pulled through in doubles for the only win of the day for the Cougars (2-4), taking an 8-4 decision over Liudmila Vasilieva and Andjela Kankaras.

Despite taking the first win of the match, BYU was unable to hold its ground against Washinton State (9-2). Junior Aubrey Paul and freshman Lisa Waldron dropped their match on Court 3 to Elizaveta Luzina and Olga Musilovich, 8-2. Playing at the No. 2 position, sophomore Desiree Tran and freshman Morgan Anderson narrowly fell, 8-6, to Elisabeth Fournier and Charlotte Koning.

In singles, Price fell on Court 2 to No. 115 Fournier in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Vasilieva defeated BYU’s Tran, 7-6, 6-0. Luzina’s 6-4, 6-4 win over BYU’s Sheehan-Dizon secured the match win for Washington State.

Anderson fought hard on Court 3, pushing Kankaras to three sets. Anderson battled her way back after dropping the first set to take the second. The final set would come down to a tiebreaker. However, Anderson’s effort was not enough to avoid a Washington State sweep as she went on to fall 6-2, 3-6, 7-6.

The Cougars next face Idaho Saturday at the Simmelink Courts at noon.

PROVO, Utah – The BYU women’s tennis team kicks off a month of away matches this weekend as it takes on the Washington State Cougars and the Idaho Vandals Friday and Saturday, respectively, in Washington.

Saturday the Cougars (2-3) narrowly dropped a 4-3 decision to Wisconsin.

Senior Megan Price and freshman Meghan Sheehan-Dizon lead the Cougars in singles, both with a 4-1 dual record. Price plays at the No. 2 position while Sheehan-Dizon sits at the No. 4 position. Sheehan-Dizon has won four consecutive matches.

With a 3-2 record during dual play, Price and Sheehan-Dizon team up to form the No. 1 doubles duo for BYU. After dropping the first two matches of the season, Price and Sheehan-Dizon are on a three match winning streak.

Washington State (8-2) is coming off a 5-2 victory over Miami (Oh). The last meeting between Washington State and BYU came in Feb. 2011 when Washington State topped BYU, 5-2. Washington State boasts No. 115 singles player Elisabeth Fornier and the No. 60 doubles duo of Liudmila Vasilieya and Elizaveta Luzina.

The Vandals (7-4) are coming off a 5-2 loss to No. 63 Wyoming. This is the first meeting between BYU and Idaho.

Both Friday and Saturday’s matches begin at noon at The Simmelink Courts.
