Martinez and Brown shine as BYU athletes set bevy of personal records
STANFORD, California – Shea Martinez and Kelsey Brown-Gilbert highlighted BYU track and field's trip to the Stanford Invitational with blistering times in the 800 meters this weekend.
Martinez finished with a time of 2:05.00, good for third among attached collegiate runners. The sophomore's performance in the race marked her third time of 2:05.00 or better in the 800 meters and the best outdoor time of her career. Brown-Gilbert, a senior, finished sixth among attached collegiate runners with a time of 2:06.22.
Carrie Jube broke her personal record in the 10,000 meters by minute with her time of 33:56.87. Makenna Smith finished 25 seconds ahead of her previous personal record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:11.60.
On the men's side, Steve Flint and Dallin Farnsworth impressed with their performances in the 5,000 meters. Flint, a senior, ran a personal record and what is now the 10 best outdoor time (13:51.98) in school history. Farnworth, a freshman, finished just behind Flint with a personal record of 13:53.38.
Freshman Connor McMillan finished the 10,000 meters with a time of 29:13.87.

BYU track and field next competes at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Arizona beginning on April 10.
BYU distance runners travel to Bay Area for important meets
PROVO, Utah – The first major outdoor meet of the season awaits the BYU distance runners this weekend at Stanford University.
“Traditionally, Stanford is a very important meet for our distance runners,” BYU track head coach Ed Eyestone said. “It’s our first big outdoor meet of the season. This will be a great time to hopefully get 14 people qualified for regionals.”
The meet will take place April 3-4 at Cobb Track and Angell Field. A link to live results of the meet can be found on the BYU women’s track and field schedule page.
Another group of distance runners will be competing just north of Stanford at a meet hosted by San Francisco State. That meet will also run Friday-Saturday with live results found on the BYU women’s track and field schedule page.
After competing last week at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, the UVU Invitational and the Aztec Invitational, the majority of the throwers, jumpers and sprinters will be off this week.
Athletes to watch
Flint, a strong steeplechaser, will set out to run a regional qualifying mark in the 5,000 meters Friday evening.
Coming off a successful 2014 cross country season, Gardner will make his debut in the 10,000 meters Friday evening.
Martinez will look to build off her success as a 2015 Indoor All-American in her first outdoor competition this season. Martinez will run in the 1500 meters on Friday, and the 800 meters on Saturday.
Kelsey Brown-Gilbert
As a senior captain and 2013 2nd Team All-American, Brown enters the outdoor season with high expectations. Brown will compete in the 1500 meters on Friday and the 800 meters on Saturday.
