PROVO, Utah – Lyndie Haddock’s third consecutive double-double helped No. 16 BYU women’s volleyball sweep Pepperdine (25-14, 25-12, 25-20) Thursday night at the Smith Fieldhouse.

“I really liked how focused we were from the beginning,” BYU head coach Heather Olmstead said. “Lyndie (Haddock) set a great game and distributed the offense well and got a lot of hitters involved. I thought offensively and defensively we were disciplined, so it was a great match.”

Setter Lyndie Haddock recorded her fifth season and third consecutive double-double with 11 digs and 34 assists to help BYU improve to 18-3 overall and 7-2 in the West Coast Conference. Senior Amy Boswell tallied a season-high tying seven blocks while Mary Lake collected nine digs. McKenna Miller added nine kills and Lacy Haddock and Veronica Jones-Perry each chipped in eight kills during the Cougars’ victory.

Pepperdine (8-13, 2-7 WCC) put up the first three points of the first set before BYU quickly countered to tie the score. A Lacy Haddock kill sparked a 6-0 run to force an early timeout and prevent the Waves from taking the lead for the rest of the set. Boswell fueled the Cougar offense with the next four points to bring the score to 13-7. Pepperdine answered with a kill on the next point, but the Cougars took off again and there was no turning back. BYU took the first set, 25-14, on a Pepperdine attack error.

Middle blocker Whitney Young Howard opened the second set for BYU with a kill. The Waves managed to keep up with the Cougars’ pace before a Lyndie Haddock service ace created distance for the Cougars at a 7-4 advantage. BYU built on the momentum to gain an eight-point lead, 13-5. Boswell and Miller teamed up to earn the Cougars' first double-digit lead of the game, 19-9. Pepperdine attempted to stop the Cougars but couldn’t as BYU won the set on a Lacy Haddock kill, 25-12.

Both teams traded points at the beginning of the third set before a Miller kill gave the Cougars a 6-5 advantage. Pepperdine tied the score at eight apiece, but BYU answered by winning the next three points. Jones-Perry earned the Cougars’ fourth service ace of the night to give BYU a 14-10 lead. The Waves rallied back to bring the set within one point, 18-17, before BYU took the next two points on kills by Miller and Howard. A Lacy Haddock service ace ended the set in BYU’s favor, 25-20.

The Cougars host Loyola Marymount on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. MDT. The match will be broadcast on BYUtv and simulcast on BYU Radio. Members of Cosmo’s Kids Club will get free admission into the match and there will be prizes and giveaways.

Last Time Out

The Cougars (17-3, 6-2 West Coast Conference) fell on the road in a five-set heartbreaker against Portland before sweeping Gonzaga at its place.

Pepperdine

• BYU faces Pepperdine (8-12, 2-6 WCC) Thursday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. MDT.
• The Cougars beat the Waves earlier this year on the road in four sets.
• BYU leads the overall series history 21-8.
• Pepperdine is just 1-4 in its last five matches. The Waves swept San Francisco last week before falling to Santa Clara in four on the road.
• Pepperdine currently sits in ninth place in league play, a match behind both Santa Clara and Saint Mary’s.

Loyola Marymount

• The Cougars compete against the Lions (14-6, 5-3 WCC) Saturday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. MDT.
• BYU holds an 11-1 advantage in the overall series history. The Cougars won the first match last year at home in four before falling in five sets on the road.
• Loyola Marymount won both matches last week against the Dons and the Broncos. The Lions are 3-2 in their last five matches.
• Loyola Marymount is tied for third place in the conference standings with Pacific.

Thursday’s match against Pepperdine is the annual Pink Match. Dig Pink shirts will be available for purchase. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the match in support of breast cancer awareness. Members of Cosmo’s Kids Club will get free admission into Saturday’s match against Loyola Marymount. There will also be other prizes and giveaways at the match.
