TEMPE -- After dropping the first game, 7-15, to host Arizona State Monday, BYU responded to win the next three, 15-9, 15-10, 15-2, and claim a 3-1 victory over the Sun Devils of the Pac-10 .
Anna-Lena Smith of Mesa, Ariz., and Melissa Layton of Tempe, Ariz., had solid efforts while returning to their home towns. Smith, BYU's all-time assist leader, tossed up 64 assists on the night to go along with a team-leading 13 digs while Layton added 11 kills, seven digs and four blocks while hitting .412. Five Cougars had double-digit kills with Mari Carpenter knocking down 20, Nina Puikkonen 19, Caroline Bower 15 and true freshman Sunny Tonga a season-high 13 to go along with Layton's 11.
"Al (Anna-Lena) had probably her best night running our offense," BYU coach Elaine Michaelis said. "We played Sunny on the rightside for three games and played Melissa in the middle all night and it worked really well. Sunny gave us some good offense on that side of the court and had some good blocking as well."
Both teams played well on offense with BYU hitting a dominating .403 and Arizona State a strong .294. Tonga proved to be the most impressive offensive force for BYU. After setting a new school match record with her .909 attack percentage against Wyoming Saturday, the freshman totalling 13 kills in 14 attempts with one error against the Sun Devils to record BYU's third best single-match effort of .857.
"We out dug Arizona State by 20 digs and they are a good defensive team," said Michaelis, whose team came up with 60 digs. "We played very good defense -- the best we have played this year."
Arizona State was led by Jamie Coughlin and Jami Peck with 16 and 14 kills, respectively. With the win, 11th-ranked BYU improves to 16-3 overall and prepares for a match with No. 19 Arizona Tuesday in Tucson. Arizona State falls to 10-8 with the loss.

In the second half of a four-matches-in-five-days road trip, eighth-ranked BYU travels to Arizona to play Arizona State Monday and No. 18 Arizona Tuesday in women's volleyball action.
The Cougars are 15-3 overall and 1-1 so far on the road trip, losing 0-3 to No. 15 Colorado State Friday before defeating Wyoming 3-0 Saturday. Arizona State is 10-7 overall and Arizona 12-7 after both schools suffered Pac-10 loses last week to nationally ranked UCLA and USC.
"We have played a lot of road matches so far this year and this will be a tough stretch playing four times in five nights against some very good teams," said BYU coach Elaine Michaelis. "Arizona State and Arizona are both very good teams."
BYU is tied for first in the Mountain West Conference at 6-1 record and leads the conference in hitting and blocking. Anna-Lena Smith of Mesa, Ariz., (Gilbert HS) set BYU's all-time assist record Saturday against Wyoming. She has 5,355 assists as a four-year starter.
