OGDEN -- No. 13 BYU maintained its claim on Utah volleyball supremacy and its undefeated record Tuesday night, sweeping instate rival Weber State in Ogden. Winning their sixth match in 12 days, the Cougars improved to 19-0 on the season with the 30-17, 30-27, 30-23 win, their eighth sweep in the last nine matches.
"Weber State is a very confident team playing at home," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "I was pleased that we were able to get our middles going offensively. We stayed in system and were very consistent in our play."
The Cougars' offensive efforts were led by sophomore outside hitter Chelsea Goodman, who had 14 kills on .385 hitting. Redshirt freshman Rachel Dyer was the only other Cougar with double-digit kills as she chipped in 11 on .438 hitting and led BYU with three aces. Junior Lindsy Hartsock was the most efficient Cougar hitter with a .625 mark, the 13th match this season in which she has hit .500 or better. Sophomore libero Lindsey Evans led BYU in digs with 15 while freshman Janvier Beaumont contributed 11.
"Rachel (Dyer) was able to get back into her groove and did a very nice job for us as did Lauren (Richards Evans)," Watson said. "They both had a real good night."
As a team, the Cougars hit .304 while holding Weber State to just .133 hitting and not allowing any of the Wildcats to record double-digit kills.
Game one was all BYU as the Cougars jumped out to an early lead and never looked back en route to the 30-17 win. However, the fatigue associated with playing so many matches of late caught up with BYU as the match wore on. The Cougars played catch-up for most of game two, finding themselves down one or two points and unable to take the lead.
Trailing 24-23, senior Lexi Brown Patterson found a seam and put down a kill to tie the game. A Weber State error on the next point gave BYU the lead but the celebration was short-lived as the Wildcats tied the game at 27-27. But the composure and experience of the Cougars proved too much for WSU as BYU scored the next three points to win the game 30-27 and head to the locker room up two games to none.
With their backs against the wall, the Wildcats quickly took control of game three, jumping out to a 16-10 lead before a 6-1 BYU run tightened the game at 17-16. Weber managed to stretch its lead to two points at 19-17, but that was all the magic the Wildcats had left as the Cougars put together an 8-0 run to take a 24-19 lead and cruised to the 30-23 game-three win.
BYU stays on the road for four of its last six matches beginning with a contest at TCU on Friday night in a 6 p.m. MST start. The Cougars swept the MWC-newcomers in the teams' first meeting this season.

PROVO -- After playing and winning three matches in the last seven days, the No. 13 Cougars continue their busy schedule this week with a Tuesday night match at instate foe Weber State.
"We start this week on the road at Weber State, a team that has played very well at home," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "Their coaching staff has them playing well. As with every in-state opponent, this one will be a challenge for our team."
The Wildcats are 10-12 on the season but are indeed playing tough at home, boasting a 7-1 record in the Dee Events Center this season. However, BYU holds a 53-0 series advantage over Weber State, including a 23-0 mark in Ogden. The two teams are also indirectly connected this year as the Wildcats have played seven matches against Cougar opponents, going 3-4 in those matches.
BYU picked up three more wins last week to stay undefeated at 18-0, including a 10-0 mark in conference play. The Cougars began the week by sweeping Utah Valley State in a Tuesday night match-up before returning to league play over the weekend. A three-game win over San Diego State Friday night gave BYU its seventh straight sweep, but the streak was broken on Saturday as the Cougars dropped game one to UNLV before coming back to win the match in four games.
Sophomore outside hitter Erica Lott came up big for the Cougars last week, recording two double-doubles and leading or sharing the lead in kills in all three matches. Lott also tallied a career-high seven blocks against the Rebels.
