No. 13 Cougars Continue Perfection in Texas

Image

FORT WORTH -- The No. 13 Cougars continued their road swing Friday night, earning a four-game win (30-21, 30-23, 25-30, 30-23) over TCU in Fort Worth to improve to 20-0 on the year and 11-0 in MWC play.

"It's always tough to come out with a victory when you're playing on the road, so we're real happy with tonight's result," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "It's been a difficult couple of weeks for us in terms of the number of matches we've played. We're just happy to get this win over a very nice TCU team."

Several Cougars had impressive performances in the win, making the victory a complete team effort. Sophomore outside hitters Erica Lott and Chelsea Goodman led BYU in kills with 18 and 17, respectively, but also contributed on other areas of the floor as Lott tied her career-high with 11 digs and Goodman recorded a career-best four blocks. The TCU offense was also stifled by a season-high seven blocks from senior Lexi Brown Patterson.

Sophomore Lindsey Evans added 23 digs on the night, marking the third time this season she has recorded 20 or more, while senior setter Lauren Richards Evans completed the double-digit dig trifecta for BYU with 10 en route to her sixth double-double of the year. Junior middle blocker Lindsy Hartsock, ranked No. 1 in the nation in hitting percentage, recorded nine kills on .500 hitting, marking the 14th match this season in which she has hit .500 or better.

"Lindsy (Hartsock) had another solid performance tonight," said Watson. "I'm proud of the way all of our players stayed composed and worked together."

After winning the first two games easily, including holding the Horned Frogs to -.028 hitting in game two, BYU took control in game three and looked to be on its way to its ninth sweep in the last 10 matches. But, down 20-24, TCU stormed back with five straight points to take its first lead of the game. A kill from Richards Evans tied the match at 25-25, but the Horned Frogs responded with another 5-0 run to steal the game from BYU.

The Cougars came out in game four looking to put the match away, but quickly found themselves down 8-5. However, BYU was not about to let its undefeated record go by the wayside, putting together a 10-2 run to take a 15-10 lead. The Cougars cruised from there, hitting a match-high .326 to win the game 30-23.

BYU now travels back to Utah to take on the Utah Utes next Friday night at 7 p.m. in Salt Lake City. The Cougars defeated the Utes for the first time in 10 matches with a four-game win this season in Provo.

No. 13 BYU Travels to Texas to Take on TCU

Image

PROVO -- Coming off a nonconference win at Weber State Tuesday, No. 13 BYU returns to Mountain West Conference play Friday when the Cougars face TCU in Fort Worth, Texas at 6 p.m. MST.

"This will be a challenging match as we travel to Texas to face a solid TCU team," BYU coach Jason Watson said. "They are coming off a nice win over Colorado State at home, where they have had some good success this year. We will need to stay within our systems and play well."

One of only four unbeaten teams remaining in Division I, the Cougars are a perfect 19-0 on the season and stand atop the MWC standings with a 10-0 record. Led by All-America candidate Lindsy Hartsock, who currently leads the nation in hitting percentage at .474, BYU has won eight of its last nine matches in three-game sweeps.

The Cougars' string of three-game victories got started with their 30-13, 30-24, 30-27 win over TCU in the first meeting between the two teams this year. The Sept. 30th match in Provo was the Horned Frogs' first league contest as an MWC member.

Coming off a five-game victory over reigning MWC Champion Colorado State on Tuesday in Fort Worth, the Horned Frogs have won their last three matches and are 15-9 overall this year. At home, TCU owns a 7-4 mark and has earned all three of its conference wins in the friendly confines of the University Recreation Center. The Horned Frogs are currently seventh in the MWC standings with a 3-5 record.

BYU owns a 5-0 advantage, including a 2-0 record in Fort Worth, in the overall series between the two schools, dating back to their days as Western Athletic Conference members. Friday's match will be the first contest in Texas between the two schools since the 1997 season. The Cougars are yet to drop a game to the Horned Frogs in the prior five meetings.
