BYU Enjoys Sweep of Utah Valley

Image

PROVO -- The BYU women's volleyball team put together a strong outing Tuesday night with a 30-26, 30-19, 30-13 sweep of the Utah Valley Wolverines in the Smith Fieldhouse. The Cougars' eighth sweep of the season improved their record to 12-5 overall.

"We were very composed tonight, especially in game one," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "Utah Valley put an enormous amount of pressure on us, but we responded very well within our personality."

Overall, BYU dominated on the court, finishing the match with 46 kills and a .314 attack percentage. The Cougar defense also proved solid with 50 digs and 7.5 team blocks. Preseason Mountain West Conference Player of the Year Chelsea Goodman led the Cougars with 12 kills and 13 digs, her fourth straight double-double and 46th of her career, one shy of the league record. Bryn Porter also recorded double-digit kills with 10.

BYU started out slow in game one after scoring the first point as the Cougars had a hard time stopping Utah Valley. BYU allowed the Wolverines to score five points before winning a side out. The Cougars gradually fought their way back, tying the game at 8-8 with a kill from Porter. UVU responded by curbing BYU's momentum and putting together a 9-2 run to make it 17-10. Porter finally stopped the UVU run with back-to-back kills, but the Wolverines fought back to take a 22-17 lead. Finally, the Cougars regained their momentum, going on a 9-4 run to tie the game at 26-26 on a hitting error. The Wolverines couldn't stop the Cougars as BYU finished the game, 30-26.

In game two the teams battled for the advantage until BYU took the lead on a straight five-point run. The Cougars got into a rhythm and extended their lead to 11-5. From there BYU cruised to a 30-19 victory, leading by as many as 12 points along the way. The Cougar defense dominated over UVU with 3.5 team blocks. Goodman also helped lead BYU to the game victory with four kills.

Both teams struggled to take a strong lead early in game three with neither team gaining more than a two-point advantage, tying the game 7-7. The Cougars then went on a three-point run to make it 10-8. UVU struggled to stop BYU as the Cougars finished the match scoring 20 of the last 25 points, recording the sweep with a 30-13 game-three win.

The Cougars will continue MWC conference play Friday as they travel to Salt Lake to face Utah at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on BYU Radio as well as being available on BYU All-Access and GameTracker.

BYU Kicks Off Deseret First Duel at Utah

Image

PROVO -- The BYU women's volleyball team (12-5, 4-3 MWC) will renew its rivalry with Utah on Friday night at 7 p.m. as the two teams meet for the 84th time. The match in Salt Lake City will be the first meeting of the newly created Deseret First Duel.

"This is another important week for us," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "Utah is always a tough opponent, especially at Crimson Court. How we respond in this two match is very important."

Senior outside hitter Chelsea Goodman has continued to step up for the Cougars, ranking among the top 10 in the Mountain West Conference in kills, digs, aces and points. The preseason MWC Player of the Year is just one double-double away from tying the league career double-double record at 47. Junior middle blocker Rachel Dyer has also been solid for BYU as she leads the MWC and ranks sixth in the nation in hitting at .448. The Cougars are capable of coming up big over the next several weeks as BYU has traditionally played its best in October, going 18-2 (.895) all-time in the month in just over two years under Watson.

An important MWC matchup is on tap for Friday night as the Cougars face Utah on Crimson Court at 7 p.m. The Utes are 7-9 overall this season and tied with BYU for fourth place in the league at 4-3 after losing the 2006 MWC Setter of the Year and Player of the Year as well as the nation's top middle blocker during the offseason. Junior outside hitter Kathryn Haynie leads the team with 3.61 kills per game while adding 2.17 digs per contest. BYU leads the all-time series, 62-21, but has not defeated Utah in Salt Lake City since 2000.

BYU and Utah will be playing for more than just in-state bragging rights on Friday as the match will mark the inaugural contest of the newly created Deseret First Duel persented by Deseret First Credit Union. The rivalry series includes competition in the 12 sports the two universities compete head-to-head during regular-season play.

The Deseret First Duel will use a system that awards points to the winner of each head-to-head competition. A team trophy will be awarded to the individual winner of each sport--football, basketball, softball, etc. Points won by the individual sports will count toward each school's overall total. At the conclusion of each school year, a granite traveling trophy will be awarded to the overall rivalry series champion.

The Cougars' match at Utah will be streamed live over the Internet on BYU Radio. All-Access and GameTracker will also be available.
