Ty Detmer was named BYU offensive coordinator on Dec. 24, 2015, by head coach Kalani Sitake. He will also coach quarterbacks. 

Detmer is one of the most heralded players in BYU history, winning the Heisman in 1990 and holding school career records for passing yards, touchdowns and total offense among several other records. He was a two-time consensus All-American, two-time winner of the Davey O’Brien Award and also won the Maxwell Award and Sammy Baugh Trophy.

A College Football Hall of Fame inductee, Detmer spent 14 years in the NFL with five different teams, and was widely recognized for his mentoring role with quarterback teammates including Brett Favre, Tim Couch, Michael Vick and Matt Schaub.

Following his NFL career, Detmer has been coaching Texas high school football at St. Andrews Episcopal School near Austin, Texas. Detmer took over the small private high school program in Texas and led the team to its best season to date in 2015 with an 8-1 record, turning around a winless team as St. Andrews has improved in win percentage each year under Detmer from records of 3-7, 3-6, 4-5, 5-3 and now 8-1 most recently. His 2015 squad outscored opponents 43.4 to 10.2 this season.

The Green Bay Packers drafted Detmer in the ninth round of the 1992 NFL draft where he spent four years as the backup to Brett Favre. He then signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1996.

Detmer became the Eagles starting quarterback later in the year and posted a 4-0 record in his first four starts. He finished the 1996 season with 2,911 yards and 15 touchdowns, leading Philadelphia to a 7-4 record and an NFC playoff appearance. His passer rating of 80.8 ranked No. 4 among NFC quarterbacks that season.

He joined another former BYU quarterback in Steve Young for one season in 1998 with the San Francisco 49ers. Filling in for an injured Young, Detmer threw for 276 yards and three touchdowns to beat the Carolina Panthers 25-23.

The Cleveland Browns wanted Detmer to mentor rookie Tim Couch in 1999. The veteran started two games before missing the 2000 season due to injury.

Detmer’s NFL career continued with the Detroit Lions for three seasons from 2001-03, and then he moved on to the Atlanta Falcons where he mentored Michael Vick and Matt Schaub.

During his 14-year career, Detmer played in 54 games and totaled 6,351 yards passing and 35 touchdowns.

Playing under LaVell Edwards at BYU from 1987-91, Detmer threw for 15,031 passing yards, which currently ranks fifth in NCAA history. His 121 career touchdown passes is tied for seventh in the NCAA record books.

Detmer threw for more than 4,000 yards in each of his sophomore, junior and senior seasons, including a school-record 5,188 yards in 1990.

His 1990 season of 5,188 yards, 41 touchdowns passes and an efficiency rating of 155.89 earned him BYU’s first and only Heisman Trophy. Detmer kicked of his Heisman campaign early in the season with a 28-21 win over the defending national champion No. 1 Miami Hurricanes in Provo. He threw for 406 yards and three touchdowns in the historic victory.

A 1991 graduate of BYU in recreation administration, Detmer is married to the former Kim Herbert and they have four daughters, Kaili, Aubri, Mayci and Rylli.
