Dee Loose is entering his ninth season on the BYU swimming staff and works with the distance swimmers.

Before his hire, Loose worked as a graduate assistant for distance swimmers under recently retired coach Tim Powers from 2003-07. He graduated from BYU in 1987 with a degree in physical education with a history minor and earned his secondary teaching certificate before graduating with a master's of science in exercise science with an emphasis in pedagogy in 2009.

Loose coached the Lone Peak High School women’s swim team to three state championships while teaching US history, American studies and US government and politics. His teams won a total of eight state titles including high school and club teams.

Loose also coached the Hilltop Aquatic Swim Team, a club team that had two swimmers who competed in the 2008 Olympic Trials — former BYU athletes Nicholas Tobler and Candice Smith— and two swimmers who qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials in Smith and former Cougar Kimberly Welch Doroghian. He also taught and coached at Woodrow Wilson High School in Tacoma, Washington, from 1991-00 and was an assistant coach at the Tacoma Swim Club from 1991-98.

He has coached high school teams to state championships in three different states: New Mexico, Utah and Washington. While at Wilson High School in Washington, Loose helped to coach Wilson to three state championships in a row from 1998-00; Loose coached Evan Martinec to become the No. 1-ranked public school backstroker in the country in 2000. He has coached numerous high school All-Americans and Junior National and National qualifiers.

Loose and his wife, Marianne, have five children.
