Team takes another step on day two of spring practice
PROVO, Utah - The BYU football team has two spring practices under its belt and the team continues to take steps forward in preparing for 2013.
More time was spent in pursuit drills, with both the offense and defense getting plenty of conditioning work throughout.
The Cougars got right to it with an 11-on-11 session early in practice, followed by some skelly drills (7-on-7) and had another round of team scrimmage at the end of practice.
Wide receiver Dallin Cutler made an impact on offense, snagging several passes in traffic, including a five-yard touchdown from quarterback Christian Stewart in skelly. Tight end Devin Mahina also caught three passes in the first team session, going for a total of 26 yards.
Quarterback Ammon Olsen tossed the only touchdown of team scrimmage, a three-yarder to Ross Apo who had to outleap a defender to snag the score. Apo also caught a 13-yard pass in a tight window between two defenders from quarterback Taysom Hill in another series. Hill led a long drive that stalled at the six yardline when defensive end Remington Peck picked up a sack. Hill was 5 of 6 for 31 yards on the drive and also had four carries for 18 yards.
Along with Peck picking up the sack, defensive back Jordan Johnson grabbed an interception off of Olsen in skelly and linebacker Manoa Pikula had a pass breakup in the first team session.
BYU's first week of spring practice wraps up on Friday afternoon.
