BYU’s Andy Reid and Daniel Sorensen win Super Bowl LIV with Kansas City

MIAMI – Former BYU football players Andy Reid and Daniel Sorensen won Super Bowl LIV with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, defeating San Francisco 31-20.

Reid, the head coach of Kansas City, played offensive line at BYU from 1978-80 and was a graduate assistant coach in 1982. Sorensen played safety for the Cougars in 2008 and 2011-13.

The Chiefs came back from down 20-10 with under seven minutes to go to score 21 unanswered points to win. 

It is the first Super Bowl victory as a head coach for Reid after taking the Philadelphia Eagles to Super Bowl XXXIX but came up short to New England. Reid won Super Bowl XXXI with Green Bay as an assistant coach under another former Cougar coach, Mike Holmgren.

Reid joins Holmgren and BYU tight end Brian Billick (Baltimore, 2001) as the only former Cougar players or coaches to win a Super Bowl as an NFL head coach.

Including postseason victories, it was career win No. 222 for Reid, No. 6 in history among NFL head coaches. 

Sorensen made his first Super Bowl appearance in his sixth year in the NFL. He started at safety and made six tackles in the game, including four solo stops.

He is the second Cougar in as many years to win a Super Bowl, following linebacker Kyle Van Noy’s victory last year with the Patriots.

Reid and Sorensen give the Cougars 43 total Super Bowl rings among former players and coaches.

Former BYU linebacker Fred Warner played on the other sideline for the San Francisco 49ers. The second-year standout started at middle linebacker and made a big impact with seven tackles, one tackle for loss, a pass deflection and an interception.

The Cougars have now had 72 combined Super Bowl appearances from 43 different players and coaches.
