Allgeier named to CFPA National Performer of the Year midseason watchlist

CHARLESTON, S.C. — College Football Performance Awards today announced its 2021 midseason watch list for the CFPA National Performer of the Year Trophy, naming BYU running back Tyler Allgeier among the 36 players being considered for the award

The sophomore from Fontana, California, is tied for the nation's lead in rushing touchdowns with 17 and is seventh in rushing yards with 1,162 and points scored at 102. In week nine of the season, he was named Capital One Orange Bowl Player of the Week and honorable mention College Football Performance Awards National Performer of the Week for his 266-yard, five touchdown performance, leading No. 14 BYU to a 66-49 win over Virginia.

During the 2021 season, he also been named the Independent Offensive Player of the Week by College Sports Madness three times and earned a helmet sticker from ESPN College Football Final host Matt Barrie following the Virginia game.

Allgeier is currently No. 9 at BYU in all-time career rushing yards with 2,465, just 29-yards shy of passing Doak Walker Award winner Luke Staley (1999-2001). He is tied at No. 7 with Lakei Heimuli (1983-86) for BYU's all-time career rushing touchdowns mark of 30.  Allgeier is No. 2 all-time in single-season rushing touchdowns with 17, eight behind Staley (25) and is No. 8 in single season rushing yards at 1,162, needing 65-yards to pass current running back coach Harvey Unga's 2007 mark (1,227). 

Allgeier was on the 2021 watch lists for the Maxwell Award, Doak Walker Award, Paul Hornung Award and the CFPA National Performer of the Year. In 2020, he finished No. 8 nationally with 1,130 rushing yards and was No. 4 in yards per carry at 7.53 for the No. 10 ranked Cougars.

The 2021 CFPA National Performer of the Year Trophy is a 22-inch K-9 optic crystal tower with eight-inch crystal football on top. The 2021 CFPA National Performer of the Year will be announced January 12, 2022. 

Two former Cougars were previously honored by the CFPA. Consensus All-American Dennis Pitta won the CFPA Elite Tight End Trophy in 2009 and All-American Kyle Van Noy won the CFPA Linebacker Trophy in 2012.
