BYU Football Scrimmage Update
PROVO, Utah -- With two weeks to go before its first game against Washington, the BYU football team continued workouts with an intrasquad scrimmage Tuesday night at Cougar Stadium.
Despite youth on the offensive line and some early season injuries, the offense showed that it should be able to produce when the season officially starts in a little more than two weeks.
All five quarterbacks that saw significant playing time moved the ball and made few errors. Senior Kevin Feterik ended the night nine of 15 passing with 88 yards. Similar numbers were put up by freshman Bret Engemann (9-15, 73 yards) and sophomore Charlie Peterson ended the night an impressive 10-11 for 164 yards and a touchdown.
"I felt good about all of our quarterbacks," head coach LaVell Edwards said. "They all looked good and when we get all the injured bodies back we'll be ready to play."
With injuries to several players on the offensive side of the ball, freshman Chris Hale took advantage and quickly became a favorite target. He finished the night with a team-high seven receptions for 73 yards.
Juniors Ben Horton and Margin Hooks also had good receiving nights with Horton ending with 61 yards on five receptions and Hooks finishing with 50 yards on four catches.
The Cougars used a frequent shotgun formation and according to Feterik, that will be common to see this season.
"What you saw tonight is pretty much what you'll see for the season," Feterik said. "It was pretty right on to what we're planning to do."
The shotgun formation is something that excites quarterback Brandon Doman, who ended the night five of 12 passing for 66 yards but is known more for his running ability.
"I love the shotgun," Doman, who finished with a team-high 28 yards rushing on three carries. "Eventually we'll be able to do more sprint outs and we can get out of the pocket and make quick decisions. I think it fits in well with my style of play and it will open things up for our team."
The Cougars first game will be against Washington, Sept. 9 at Cougar Stadium.
