FOOTBALL BOWL SUBDIVISION INDEPENDENT PLAYERS OF THE WEEK NAMED

BYU wide receiver Cody Hoffman, Notre Dame linebacker Prince Shembo and BYU kicker Justin Sorensen have been named FBS Independent Players of the Week, for games played through November 10th.  Hoffman is recognized on Offense, Shembo is honored on Defense, and Sorensen is cited on Special Teams.  The weekly honor is the third for Sorensen, the second for Hoffman (named a Special Teams Player of the Week in 2011) and the first for Shembo.

The FBS Independent Players of the Week are selected by members of a nationwide media panel, which includes equal representation from each of the independent institutions’ coverage markets.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BYU WR Cody Hoffman A junior from Crescent City, Calif., Hoffman caught nine passes for 108 yards and three touchdowns, as BYU outdistanced Idaho by a score of 52-13 on a sub-freezing night at LaVell Edwards Stadium.  Hoffman’s performance marked his 11th hundred-yard receiving game, tied for third all-time at BYU.  With 23 career touchdown receptions, Hoffman has moved into a fourth-place tie on BYU’s career ledger.  In addition, he extended to 29 his streak of consecutive games with at least one reception.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Notre Dame LB Prince Shembo A junior from Charlotte, N.C., Shembo set a career high with three sacks, in helping No. 3 Notre Dame improve to 10-0 with a 21-6 victory at Boston College.  The sacks were among four tackles for loss on a five-takedown night for Shembo, who also recorded a fumble recovery in the game’s closing moments.  The sack hat-trick is the first for a Notre Dame player since the 2006 season.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BYU K Justin Sorensen A junior from South Jordan, Utah, Sorensen broke a long-standing BYU record in the Cougar’s 52-13 win over Idaho on a 27-degree night in Provo.  By converting all seven of his PAT attempts, Sorensen extended his personal streak to 68 consecutive PATs, breaking the previous school mark of 67—a record that had stood since 2004.  Still yet to miss a PAT attempt as a BYU kicker, Sorensen was also 1-for-2 on his field goal attempts and recorded four touchbacks on nine kickoffs.
