Batty Named Byers Scholarship Finalist
PROVO, Utah—Senior track and cross country athlete Miles Batty has been selected as one of six finalists for the NCAA’s 2012 Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship.
The Byers Scholarships were established in 1988 to recognize the contributions of former NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. Recipients must have at least a 3.5 grade-point average, demonstrate evidence of superior character and leadership, and show that participation in athletics has been a positive influence on their personal and intellectual development.
The scholarship rewards one male and one female athlete $24,000 per year for graduate work and the athletes can renew the scholarship.
Batty earned a spot at this summer’s Olympic qualifiers in the 1,500-meter and later broke the indoor collegiate mile record with a time of 3:54.54 at the Millrose Games in February 2012. In his senior year as a cross country runner, Batty was named a 2011 USTFCCCA All-American as well as Mountain Region Athlete of the Year. Batty placed 14th at the 2011 National Championships and won four individual cross country championships throughout the year.
Batty is double majoring in neuroscience and exercise science and has maintained a 3.93 GPA. COSIDA named Batty an Academic All-American twice and he was named the 2011 COSIDA National Scholar Athlete of the Year in addition to four other scholar athlete of the year accolades.
