Rainer Ng at Asian Games

INCHEON, South Korea--BYU sophomore swimmer Rainer Ng is in South Korea competing in the Asian Games for his home country of Singapore.

The Asian Games are the largest multi-sports games after the Olympics. Similar to the Olympics they are held every four years and this is the 17th edition of the games.

The two-week event begins Sept. 19 and runs through Oct. 4 and will feature 45 countries competing in 28 Olympic sports, as well as eight non-Olympic sports.

“Rainer is an outstanding trainer, and competitor for us. We want to do everything we can to support our foreign athletes when it comes to representing their home country,” BYU head swim coach John Brooks said. “Having Rainer compete in the Asian Games will be a great honor to Singapore and to BYU.”

During his freshman season at BYU, Ng received the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation/Turbo Male Athlete of the Week twice. He was also named to the All-MPSF First team for performances in the 800 freestyle relay (6:31.41), 100 backstroke (48.33), 200 back (1:46.17) and 200 butterfly (1:48.80).
