Cougars Head to MPSF Championships
PROVO, Utah – The BYU swim and dive teams travel to California to compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship on Feb. 20-23.
“Conference is what we have been training for all year,” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “I am looking forward to having a strong team, including one of the strongest women’s teams we have had in several years. Being outdoor will post some natural element issues, but with this being the last meet of the season and the final meet for some of our swimmers, our team is ready for anything.”
The men’s team took third at the MPSF Championships last year. Out of the eight MPSF Championship meets, the men have finished first four times - 2012, 14-16. The women have placed fourth the past two years.
During the four-day meet, the Cougars will compete against Cal Poly, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, Hawaii and Pacific. UC Davis and San Diego will also compete on the women’s side.
Senior Payton Sorenson holds the MPSF Championship records in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events with times of 19.53 and 42.94, respectively. BYU alum Jake Taylor holds the MPSF Championship records in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke as well as the 200-yard individual medley.
The swim team will compete in La Mirada, California, at the La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center, while the divers will be in Mission Viejo at the Marguerite Aquatic Center. Swimming begins Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. PST and will continue Thursday through Saturday with preliminaries at 9:00 a.m. For the divers, competition will begin at 10:00 a.m. PST on Thursday and Friday, while Saturday’s dive meet will begin at noon PST.
Results will be posted daily on the BYU swim and dive schedule page and live results can be found on the Meet Mobile app.
