Cougars Face Conference Rival University of Utah in First Dual Meet of 2000-2001 Season
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams will host instate rival Utah in the first dual meet of the season, Friday at 6 p.m., in the Richards Building Pool. Both the men's and women's teams are set to defend their Mountain West Conference Championships.
Series with the Utes
The men and women were both 2-0 against the Utes last season. The men are 14-6 in the last 20 meets against Utah, while the women have gone undefeated in 10 meets the past five seasons.
Men Swimmers to Watch
Arunas Savickas, senior: Swims back and free. Won two individual titles at the 2000 MWC Championships. Represented his native Lithuania at the 2000 Olympic Games. All-America honors all three years at BYU.
Gary Tan, sophomore: Swims back. Tan is the national record holder in the 200 back in his native singapore and was a MWC finalist in two events. Represented Singapore in 2000 Olympic Games.
Drew Watkins, sophomore: Swims breast. Watkins placed second in the 200 breast and third in the 100 breast at the MWC Championships as a freshman.
Women Swimmers to Watch
Jennifer Tasker, senior: Swims breast. Tasker is the defending MWC Champion in the 200 breast. All-America honors and four-time Olympic Trials participant.
Amanda Grant; sophomore: Swims breast and free. Grant is the defending MWC Champion in the 100 breast.
Tamber Covington; freshman: Swims breast and IM. The team's top recruit, Covington was a high school All-American and a 2000 Olympic Trials qualifier.
Divers to Watch
Aaron Russell, sophomore: Russell won the MWC title on the 1M last year and was an NCAA qualifier in both the 1M and 3M. Earned All-America honors.
Justin Wilcock: sophomore: Returned from a two-year LDS mission. 1998 WAC Champion on 1M, 3M and platform. Earned NCAA All-America honors.
Kelli Einfeldt; sophomore: Team captain this season after a solid freshman year.
Anna Tutunnikova; senior: Tutunnikova is a two-time Russian national champion.
