Cougars Wrap-up Weekend at Lincoln Shootout

IRVINE -- After 13 more events on the second day of the Lincoln Shootout, the BYU men's swimming team had another successful outing. In Saturday's action the Cougars came out on top of every team except for Hawaii, which in turn pushed BYU's Shootout record to 7-1 in the two-day event that was hosted by UC Irvine.

"The guys swam really well on both days this weekend," BYU coach Tim Powers said after the conclusion of Saturday's races. "We looked super all the way around. And we now are looking forward to UNLV this coming week; they always have a great team."

The Lincoln Shootout consisted of five teams-- UC Irvine, Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly, Hawaii and BYU. For the two-day event, each team was scored in a head-to-head fashion on each day separately. The Cougars came out on top of all four of the other schools on Friday but were not able to repeat the same flawless result on the second day.

The Cougars won against three of the four teams on Saturday. BYU finished the second day ahead of UC Irvine (79-34), Cal State Northridge (102-9) and Cal Poly (94-19). The only team that the Cougars were not able to out perform on Saturday was Hawaii as the Warriors won that match-up by only three points (55-58).

Among the individual leaders on Saturday for the Cougars was senior Travis Price. Price won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:40.27 and he came in second in the 500 free as he scored a place of 4:34.20, which was only two seconds behind the 500-free winner. BYU also saw some other impressive individual swims in the 200 IM as the team had the top three finishers. Neal Hamilton took first in the 200 IM (1:52.81), while Jacoby Jacobsen (1:53.76) and Andrew Rutherfurd (1:54.72) finished in second and third respectively.

Another notable performance by the Cougars came in the 400 free relay as both of the teams that BYU was allowed to enter placed in the top three. The Cougars crowded the winners' podium as their teams finished in first (3:03.55) and third (3:07.17) place.

The BYU men's swimming team will next be in action, along with the women's team, this coming Friday as the UNLV Rebels come to Provo for the Mountain West Conference dual meet. The action will begin at 6 p.m.
