Gymnasts post season high in win over Southern Utah

PROVO, Utah – The BYU women’s gymnastics team recorded its best score of the season in a 195.800-194.075 victory over Southern Utah University on Saturday afternoon at the Smith Fieldhouse.

“It was a good meet today,” head coach Brad Cattermole said. “I thought on vault, we vaulted better than we scored but then they came back on bars and did pretty well. We hit our routines, we're still making little mistakes that I think we'll correct as time goes. Beam we stayed on and that's a plus, it makes it easier to score. We had a season high on floor which was awesome. They did really well and have been working really hard. They want to compete well, they want to score this year and the want to do well. They've been busting it in the gym everyday and it's finally starting to show.”

The Cougars opened the meet with the vault, scoring 48.900. Eliane Kulczyk recorded a team and meet high with a score of 9.825. Mikaela Jones recorded a new career high, scoring 9.800. Makenzie Johnson scored a 9.775 and Sarah Yandow Wensel and Raquel Willman notched matching 9.750’s.

BYU had four gymnasts score a 9.800 or higher to tie a season high with a score of 49.050 on the bars. Megan Bain and Willman led the way for the Cougars, with both tying a career high with a score of 9.850. Haylee Rollins and Wensel both recorded a 9.800 with Marguerite Lindstrom rounding out the five scores with a 9.750 to tie her personal best.

Bain recorded the high mark for the Cougars on the beam with a score of 9.825 with Willman and Ashley Follett scoring a 9.750. Vidmar added a 9.700 and Summer Raymond scored a 9.650 to give BYU a total of 48.650 in the event.

The Cougars rebounded from the beam to score a season high 49.150 on the floor in the last event of the evening. Four members of the team tied or set a new career highs with their score. Rollins tied a career high with a score of 9.875. Willman, Johnson and Wensel all set new career highs with 9.850, 9.825 and 9.825, respectively. Kulczyk rounded out the scoring with a 9.775.

Willman won the all-around with a season-high score of 39.200.

BYU returns to action on Friday, March 1, hosting North Carolina State and University of Utah at the Marriott Center at 7 p.m. MST and will be broadcast live on BYUtv and BYUtvsports.com. The meet will be part of the Deseret First Duel between the Utes and the Cougars, with three points up for grabs in the season challenge. Utah leads 19-16 in the standings.
