Cougars top 195 in rematch vs. Utah State

LOGAN, Utah (March 4, 2013) – For the third meet in a row, the BYU women’s gymnastics team scored a 195 or better and outscored the Utah State Aggies 195.025-192.900 on Monday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

The meet was the second of the year between the Cougars and Aggies, with BYU taking home a victory in both contests.

The Cougars started out on bars, scoring a 49.050, with each gymnast scoring over a 9.725. Haylee Rollins tied a season high with a 9.875 and Raquel Willman picked up a 9.825. Megan Bain and Sarah Yandow Wensel also scored well, both going for 9.800.

Eliane Kulczyk had BYU’s best vault with a 9.850 and Rollins added a 9.825. Makenzie Johnson added a 9.800 to give the Cougars 48.850 in the event.

The floor continued to be solid with every gymnast over 9.750, leading to a 49.050 team score. Bain and Rollins led with 9.850 each and Kulczyk scored a 9.800.

On the beam, the Cougars battled some gaffes and came away with a 48.075 in the event but still managed a 195.025 final score. Bain and Willman led the way with a 9.800 and 9.750, respectively.

In her first meet of the season as an all-around competitor, Bain finished second with a 39.125. Johnson also competed in all four events and finished in third place with a 38.975. Southern Utah’s Sarah Landes took the top mark with a 39.175.

BYU competes in its third meet in a week on Friday with a trip to Southern Utah University to take on the Thunderbirds at 7 p.m. MST in Centrum Arena. The Cougars hosted SUU earlier this season and scored their best number of the year with a 195.800.
