Five BYU gymnasts named Scholastic All-Americans

PROVO, Utah – Five BYU gymnasts were named National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women Scholastic All-Americans.

One senior and four freshmen received the honor. Senior Mikaela Jones graduated in exercise science upon qualifying as a scholastic All-American. Freshmen Cheyenne Hill, Savanna Maradiaga, Marielle Mitchell and Natasha Trejo received Scholastic All-American honors for the first time. Mitchell and Trejo are studying biology and dietetics, respectively. Hill and Maradiaga are both open majors.

"Being a student-athlete, it is very important that academics become a priority in your life," BYU gymnastics head coach Guard Young said. "Our five scholastic All-Americans are proving just that. The demands of training and traveling at the highest level requires a lot of time and energy, so becoming an Academic All-American is a very big deal. I am so proud of these girls and what they were able to achieve this year!"

Gymnasts must earn at least a 3.5 GPA during the 2015-2016 season to be eligible for recognition.

BYU gymnastics is known for its academic success, having tied with women’s golf for the highest team GPA (3.41) of all BYU athletic teams during winter semester.
