Seventeen BYU gymnasts earn all-conference academic honors
PROVO, Utah — Seventeen Cougars received Academic All-Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference honors on Tuesday.
“They are student-athletes and we pride ourselves in being students before athletes,” BYU head coach Guard Young said. “Gymnastics lends itself to doing well in the classroom because to be at this level, you need to follow instructions and work hard.”
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must finish the 2016-17 academic year with a GPA of 3.2 or higher and have appeared on the squad list during the 2017 season.
The Cougars finished fourth at the MRGC Championship in March with an overall score of 194.675. They advanced to the NCAA Regionals in Seattle for a fifth-place finish and earned a 195.025, BYU’s highest regional score in 12 years.
“I like the direction the program is going gymnastically and academically,” Young said.
Every routine performed at regionals will return for the 2018 campaign.
