First Home Meet for Cougar Gymnasts

PROVO -- After starting the season on a good note in Cancun, Mexico, at the Cancun Classic, BYU will be at home for its first home meet of the season Friday night when the Cougars play host to Texas Woman's University in the Marriott Center.

"The team is looking forward to competing at home," BYU coach Brad Cattermole said. "The girls saw a lot of things they could improve in from last week and are excited to do better."

BYU scored a 194.025 and came in third place among three top-20 teams last weekend. The Cougars enjoyed a good night on beam, recording a 48.975 team score. Several gymnasts turned in solid individual efforts as well. Dayna Smart scored a 9.850 to lead the team on beam, with Kacie Capra Callens right behind her at 9.825. Alethea Boon also had a good meet on beam at 9.775. Freshmen McKell Poulson and Jenna Kerbis had strong collegiate debuts on bars and beam, respectively.

Meanwhile, TWU will be in its first meet of the season Friday night. The Pioneers, an NCAA Division II gymnastics program, are the reigning USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Champions and return twelve competitors from last year's squad. TWU is led by senior Courtney Arno and juniors Brisa Fuentes and Nicole Poling.

"Texas Woman's does very well every year," Cattermole said. "They do a lot with the talent they have."
