PROVO -- The BYU Gymnastics team learned of its NCAA Championship Regional berth today when NCAA officials announced the 2008 regional selections.

The Cougar squad will compete in the Northeast Region at Penn State Universtity on Saturday, April 12. The meet will start at 4 p.m. MT.

"We're looking forward to going to Penn State," said BYU head coach Brad Cattermole. "We have never been there as a team. It will be a fun adventure."

BYU will face five other squads at the Regionals competition in University Park, Penn. Those teams include No. 1 Georgia, No. 12 Auburn, No. 13 Denver, No. 30 Iowa State and No. 22 Penn State.

This marks BYU's 19th Regional berth under Cattermole's direction. Though competition looks to be tight, Cattermole is looking ahead to prepare his team for the meet.

"We are going to rest up a bit and then train hard," Cattermole said. "Everyone knows what need to be done, and we'll work hard to be as prepared as we can for the competition."

Six teams, five all-around competitors (who are not on a qualifying team) and one individual event specialist per event [who has a minimum Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 9.4] were named to each of the six regions. The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Athens, Georgia, April 24-26, hosted by the University of Georgia.

In addition, the event winners at the regional championships will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.
