Cougar Gymnasts Face Utes in Deseret Duel Meet
PROVO -- In their final meet of the regular season, the BYU women’s gymnastics team will host in-state rival University of Utah on Friday in the Marriott Center. The annual Deseret Duel meet will begin at 7 p.m. and will be televised live on BYUTV.
"I was happy with our last meet," BYU head coach Brad Cattermole said. "We're still capable of much better and we're just trying to get better every meet. We can compete with anyone, we just have to go out there and have fun."
With three Deseret Duel points on the line, BYU will look to upset the Utes, who currently hold a commanding lead for first place in the North Central region while the Cougars sit in sixth place.
BYU is coming off their most impressive performance of the season as they posted a season-high 195.300 on the road against Arizona last weekend. After beginning the season 10-2-2 including an impressive win at Arkansas, the Cougars have suffered five tough losses and will look to end their recent losing streak.
The Utes have posted impressive wins throughout their season with victories over gymnastic powerhouses such as UCLA and Georgia. However, Utah has lost two consecutive meets against Florida and Oregon State. Still, the Utes season-low team score is a 195.700.
BYU and Utah have faced two mutual opponents: Georgia and Utah State. The Cougars were unable to top the Gymdogs but BYU and the Utes defeated Utah State.
