BYU Women Beat Colorado State
PROVO -- Led by its diving and the strength of its sprinters, the BYU women's swim team defeated Colorado State Friday night, 131.5-110.5, in Provo.
Freshman Heidi Lietz had a breakthrough night for the Cougars, posting wins in the 50 free and 200 fly. Mountain West Conference female swimmer of the week Amy Lueken claimed her third collegiate win in a row in the 500 free, while seniors Mary Duffin and Hanalee Hawkins contributed wins as well.
"We wanted to win this meet," BYU head coach Stan Crump said. "Colorado State is one of the top three teams in the conference. Our sprinters really came alive, and it was a good win for us."
Conference diver of the week Rachelle Smith Kunkel continued her domination on the other end of the pool, sweeping both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Teammate Kelli Einfeldt, a freshman, finished second in both events.
The BYU women's swimming and diving team will resume competition at noon on Saturday when it hosts New Mexico.
