Cougar Women to Host Colorado State and New Mexico
The women's swimming and diving team will play host to conference rivals Colorado State and New Mexico. The Cougars will face the Rams Friday at 6 p.m. before taking on the Lobos Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Richards Building. The men are off this weekend.
Last Weekend
The BYU men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Air Force and Wyoming last weekend in dual meet competition. Freshmen Gary Tan, Stephen Wells, and Josh Johnston won individual races, as well as upperclassmen Arunas Savickas, Rob Morris and Jay Buys. On the women's side, sophomore Amy Lueken won her first two collegiate races, claiming the 200 free event both meets. Melissa Belliston, Jennifer Tasker, and Jennifer Teerlink won individual events as well. The diving teams dominated as well, with wins in seven of their total eight events. Rachelle Kunkel led the competition with a win on the 1-meter against Air Force and clean sweep of both the 1-meter and 3-meter events against Wyoming. Senior Devan Porter led the men with first- and second-place finishes on the 1- and 3-meter, respectively.
Scouting Colorado State and New Mexico
Colorado State boasts what is regarded by many to be the team to beat within the Mountain West Conference. Lyndsey Carlaw is also a top-three swimmer in the 100 and 200 free and holds the conference-best time in the 200 IM. Sprinter Patty Nash holds the conference's top time in the 100 fly, as well as top-three times in the 50 and 100 free. Teammates Nicole Ryan, Emily Bradenburg, and Sandy Leaycraft hold conference top times as well.
New Mexico is a solid team also, led by freestyler Quinn Michie, who garnered Mountain West Conference female swimmer of the week
honors earlier in the season. Erin Smith, Patricia Thompson, and Sandra Colburn are also solid swimmers for the Lobos.
Season to Date
Junior All-American Arunas Savickas leads the Mountain West Conference with conference-best times in four events. Freshmen Stephen Wells and Gary Tan also hold conference-best times to date. For the women, junior Jennifer Tasker owns the best time in the 100 breast. After this weekend, the men and women will have one more meet against Utah before beginning training for the
conference championships.
