Women Take Win In Vegas, Men Fall Short
LAS VEGAS, Nevada (Nov. 6,2010) - The women of the BYU swim team came back after their loss to SDSU this weekend for the win against UNLV, 182-118. The men, however, fell short to the Rebels, 172-122.
"I feel really good about our efforts today," BYU head coach Tim Powers said. "UNLV has a great team and our girls competed really well and took the win. The men knew that this was going to be a tough competition for them and I'm really proud that they weren't intimidated by this All-American team."
The meet began with the 200 medley relay team of Candice Smith, Sara Jayne Baldwin, Kim Welch and Aleesha Miller winning first place with their time of 1:45.17.
The 200 free was a great competition for BYU with Rachel Grant taking first for the women with her time of 1:49.73. The men had a 1-2 sweep with Christian Keil and John Kendrick taking first and second with their times of 1:40.72 and 1:40.76, respectively.
Smith won the 100 and 200 backstroke for the women with her times of 56.82 and 2:01.07. Freshman Jake Taylor placed first in the same events with a times of 49.58 and 1:48.71.
Baldwin and Londyn Clawson of the woman's team took first and second in the 100 breast stroke with their times of 1:04.35 and 1:05.06, respectively.
The women had a 2-3-4 sweep in the 200 butterfly. Welch placed second with 2:02.17, Marni Knoop placed third with 2:04.99 and Jessica Ampuero took fourth with 2:06.20.
Transfer to the team, Ryan Krause took second in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 1:55.90.
Aleesha Miller recorded first-place times of 23.62 and 51.39 in the 50 and 100 free. Baldwin placed second in the 100 free right behind Miller with a time of 51.86.
Keil placed first in the 100 free with a time of 46.59.
"UNLV has a good team and I was glad for the competition," team captain Christian Keil said. "It was awesome to see all the guys step up to the challenge and work hard for every win. We have a few things we need to improve on, so we're excited to get back to Provo and go to work."
In the 200 breast, Clawson of BYU recorded a first place time of 2:21.02 in the 200 breaststroke.
Welch and Grant had a 1-2 sweep in the 100 butterfly with their times of 55.41 and 55.53, respectively.
The women had another sweep in the 400 IM, taking first, second and third place. Grant took first with her time of 4:20.46, Allie Dodds took second with 4:28.19 and Ampuero took third with 4:29.65.
The women ended the meet strong by taking first in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:34.31. Team members consisted of Taryn Toolson, Baldwin, Samantha Crist and Miller.
On the boards, Brandon Watson had a sweep taking first in the 1 and 3-Meter diving competition. For the women, Dayna Christensen took first in the 3-meter competition with Syrena Miskin right behind her taking second.
The Cougars will head back to Provo for a week off before they head to Long Beach for the Toshiba Classic.
