Women Overpower CSU Rams

PROVO -- The BYU women’s team received their first win of 2011 in a crushing defeat against Colorado State University.

“I was very pleased with their performance today,” BYU head coach Tim Powers said. “I was a little worried about us being rusty after having spent over a month without competing, but I was really happy with the way everybody raced today.”

The BYU swimmers were able to post a first place finish in all but one event. The meet began with the BYU team consisting of Candice Smith, Sara Jayne Baldwin, Kim Welch and Aleesha Miller winning the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:45.52.

In the next event, freshman Allie Dodds won the 1000 free with her time of 10:32.02 while Alina Fong of BYU came in second with her time of 10:39.60.

Rachel Grant tallied her first of three first place wins in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.59. Michelle Menezes grabbed third with 1:56.52.

Londyn Clawson and Baldwin took first and third in the100 breast with times of

1:05.20 and 1:05.75, respectively.

BYU had a 1, 2 sweep in the 200 fly with Welch scoring first with 2:06.07 and Jessica Ampuero following her with 2:06.99.

In the 50 free, Taryn Toolson posted a first place time of 23.95, while Miller grabbed third with 24.26.

The 100 free gave way to another 1, 2 sweep as Toolson and Baldwin finished first and second with times of 57.78 and 53.02.

Candice Smith took first with her time of 2:01.79 in the 200 back. In the next event, Clawson took the win in the 200 breast with 2:20.95.

Dodds and Menezes captured first and second in the 500 free with times of 5:08.23 and 5:11.99.

As the fifth of six 1, 2 sweeps for BYU, Grant and Welch finished first and second in the 100 fly with times of 55.93 and 56.51, respectively.

Grant went on to her third and final first place win of the day in the 200 IM with her time of 2:04.86 while Baldwin followed finishing second with 2:08.28.

The BYU 400 free relay team consisting of Toolson, Sam Crist, Smith and Miller recorded their first place time of 3:31.09 to finish the meet.

On the boards, Dana Christensen had a successful day, finishing first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions.

The entire BYU swim team will return to the Richards Building pool for the first time in the new year to face off with Air Force on Jan. 20 at 6 p.m.
