Cougars wrap up 2013 season

With the help of two new freshmen, the BYU women’s tennis team improved on its 8-15 record from last year to finish 10-11 and claim a sixth place finish in the West Coast Conference. 

 

Sophomore Meghan Sheehan Dizon earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team in singles. Freshman Nicolette Tran joined Sheehan-Dizon on the Second Team in doubles.

 

The Cougars started the 2013 season with four straight wins en route to an 8-2 home record. One of their best wins of the year was a 4-3 victory over No. 70 Washington State on April 8. 

 

Senior Aubrey Paul, who was originally a walk-on for the Cougars, earned a team-high 20 wins, including a 15-4 mark during the regular season, as she anchored the No. 6 singles position throughout the entire year.

 

Newcomers Nicolette Tran and Mackenna Maddox had a big impact on the team as freshmen. Tran notched the best win percentage for the team (.700), playing in all 21 matches. Maddox, a Texas native, contributed 15 victories this year, mostly at the No. 5 spot.

 

BYU competed in the first round of the WCC Tournament but lost a disappointing, hard fought match to Loyola Marymount, 4-2.

 

The team loses only two senior players next year and will look to improve its conference standing with most of its roster coming back for the 2014 season.
