Cougars cruise past Wolf Pack in 5-2 win

PROVO, Utah -- The bottom half of the lineup turned in convincing performances as BYU women’s tennis squelched Nevada, 5-2, in a regional matchup Thursday.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 3-4 while the Wolf Pack drop to 5-4.
“I think it was a great match for us,” BYU head coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. “I was really proud of how the bottom half of the lineup stepped up today.”
BYU jumped out to take the doubles point, swinging momentum going into singles. The Cougars are 3-0 this season when winning doubles.
Third doubles pair Morgan Anderson-Littlewood and Mackenna Maddox finished first with an 8-2 lopsided victory over Caroline Konigsfeldt and Beatriz Garcia Planas.
Freshman Toby Miclat and junior Meghan Sheehan-Dizon followed at second doubles by clinching the point for BYU, stunning Sheila Smiley and Juliette Legendre, 8-7 (7-3).
BYU was forced to make a lineup adjustment after Nicolette Tran suffered an injury earlier in the week. The change proved to be fruitful as the Cougars took the next four singles matches.
Freshman Savannah Ware dismantled her opponent with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 win at the sixth singles slot while Miclat took care of Smiley in straight sets at fourth singles, 6-4, 6-2.
At No. 5 singles, Anderson-Littlewood clinched the match for BYU by topping Monika Magusiak, 6-3, 6-2.
“I think Morgan (Anderson-Littlewood) did a great job,” Jones-Spencer said. “She played with a lot of energy from the start.”
Senior Desiree Tran also posted a win at third singles with a similar result, defeating Caroline Konigsfeldt 6-2, 6-3.
Sheehan-Dizon fell to Sheila Morales Hildalgo in tiebreakers in the second set, losing her match 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). Mayci Jones was also ousted in two sets, 6-4, 6-1.
BYU stays home for its West Coast Conference opener against San Francisco Saturday at noon MST. Live scoring will be available through the BYU athletics website.
