All Cougars in finals at BYU Invitational

PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s tennis continued to shine Friday in the BYU invitational. First, the duo of Nicolette Tran and Savannah Ware won the doubles final by beating teammates Morgan Anderson-Littlewood and Meghan Sheehan-Dizon. Then Tran and Sheehan-Dizon both won in the singles semifinals to secure a spot in the finals Saturday.

“The girls looked good today,” BYU head coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. “We started the day with great doubles. It is awesome to have all-BYU finals for singles and doubles.”

Tran and Ware won their early doubles semifinal easily, beating McKenzie Davis and Kallie Sperry (8-3) of Utah State to reach the final. Sheehan-Dizon and Anderson-Littlewood fought back from a 0-3 hole to take their semifinal against Utah State’s Nini Guensler and Lexi Turley (8-6).

The doubles final was one of the best matches of the tournament so far. At one point, four straight games went to deuce. With the match tied 7-7, the two teams went to a seven-point tiebreak to determine the match. Both teams had match points before Tran and Ware pulled out the victory, winning 8-7 (11-9).

“We finished the day with some exciting singles matches,” Jones-Spencer said. “Meghan and Nicolette played really tough today.”

Sheehan-Dizon won her semifinal match in straight sets against Magdalena Stencel of Wyoming (7-6 (7-4), 6-4). Tran dropped her first semifinal set against Utah State’s Davis but stormed back in the second set. She continued the strong play in the third set to take the match (4-6, 6-1, 6-4).

Anderson-Littlewood also played in the quarterfinals of the main draw Friday, but lost to Utah State's Davis (6-4, 5-7, 6-3). Freshman Katie Fitt and Ware were also on the court competing in the Consolation bracket. Both advanced to the semifinals to be played tomorrow. Fitt beat Nastya Tokareva of Wyoming (6-3, 6-0) and Ware beat the Cowgirls Cecilia Mercier (6-1, 6-0). Their semifinal matches will be played Saturday at 9 a.m.

The singles final between Sheehan-Dizon and Tran will take place at 10 a.m. at the BYU Outdoor Tennis Courts. In the case of rain, the matches will be moved to BYU’s Indoor Tennis Facility.
