Sheehan-Dizon and Jones pace Cougars at Regionals
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Senior Meghan Sheehan-Dizon and sophomore Mayci Jones paced BYU women’s tennis on day two of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships Thursday in Albuquerque. Both Cougars advanced into the round of 16 after two victories Thursday.
Sheehan-Dizon beat Denise Van der Ben of New Mexico State in three sets 4-2, 6-2, 6-2 in her first match of the day. She then defeated Wyoming’s Nastya Tokareva 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to advance. Jones ousted Emmie Marx of Idaho 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in her second round match and advanced to beat Utah’s Alexia Petrovic 6-2, 6-2.
“Everyone was able to win their first singles matches but unfortunately we were only able to pull out two of the six afternoon matches,” BYU head coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. “We played really well in doubles today.”
BYU had three doubles duos advance into the round of 16 Thursday. Jones and Toby Miclat, the No. 1 seed, beat a duo from Colorado 8-5 to advance. Sheehan-Dizon teamed up with Morgan Anderson-Littlewood to win in dominating fashion over a duo from the Air Force Academy 8-1. Nicolette Tran and Savannah Ware maintained their perfect doubles record this season by beating a Montana State duo 8-6.
Matches continue Friday when Sheehan-Dizon, Jones and the three Cougar doubles teams will look to continue to advance through the draws.
