Cal Eliminates Cougars From NCAA Play

BERKELEY -- The No. 44 BYU women's tennis team went into its match with No. 12 California as the big underdog and could not pull off the upset, losing 4-0. The Golden Bears took two doubles matches and won the first three singles matches off the court to clinch the victory over the Cougars.

In doubles play, Elizaveta Khoudoiarova and Rebecca Pike came close at the No. 3 position but fell short, losing 8-6. At No. 1, the No. 22 tandem of Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones was too much for the No. 43 pair of Brooke Beverley and Dominique Reynolds, winning the match 8-4.

The Golden Bears won three straight matches in straight sets to clinh the victory on singles play. The wins came in the middle of the singles lineup, at No. 3, 4 and 5. Brooke Beverley lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3, falling to No. 65 Jieun Jacobs. At No. 4, Rebecca Pike fought hard in her match but lost 6-4, 6-0. Nicole Havlicek knocked off Lindsay Ferrell 6-2, 6-2 to give the Bears the hard-fought victory.

This was the second straight season a BYU tennis team was knocked out by Cal. In 2001, the BYU men's tennis team lost 4-1 to Cal in a contest that was tighter than the score would indicate.
