Chiew To Play In Singles Championship At BYU Invitational
PROVO -- BYU All-American Eline Chiew advanced to the finals of the first flight tournament of the BYU Invitational Friday.
Chiew, who won her first round match Thursday in straight sets, defeated Megan Payne from the University of Utah 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, to advance to the finals where she will face Washington State's Erica Perkins. Perkins advanced by defeating Boise State's Pia-Lena Ander 6-1, 6-1.
The championship singles rounds will be played tomorrow starting at 9:30 a.m. at the BYU outdoor tennis courts.
The tournament, which features players from Air Force, Boise State, BYU, Colorado State, Utah, Utah State, Washington State, Weber State and Wyoming, finished doubles play Friday with the team of Ander and Beau Jones, from Boise State, defeating Perkins and Sara Burrows from Washington State in a tie breaker 9-8 (8-4).
Other than the loss in the top flight, Washington State won the other three flights. In the three they won, they defeated three teams from BYU.
Along with Chiew in the first flight, five other BYU players will play in the championship match tomorrow. Liza Khoucloiarova, Dominique Reynolds, Lu Oswald, Shari Smith and Jamie Parker will compete for the title in the fourth through eighth flights, respectively.
The tournament will finish tomorrow with singles matches starting at 9:30 a.m. and championship matches starting at 12 noon.
